Obituary of John David Carr
Colonel John D. Carr, 87, of Belfast passed away on April 29, 2022, in Bangor.
He was born on October 4, 1934, in Exter, New Hampshire to George and Rose Carr, one of seven children all boys. The family moved to Belfast in 1949 where he attended Crosby High School.
Colonel Carr enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1953 and was released from active duty as a Sergeant in 1956. In 1957, he commenced study at the University of Maine, where he graduated in 1961. Commissioned a Second Lieutenant that same year, Colonel Carr began his career: as an Infantry Officer with the 3rd Marine Division.
Colonel Carr participated in various operations in Vietnam from 1967-to 1968 with the 3rd Marine Division. He completed Amphibious Warfare School in 1971 and Command and Staff College in 1981. He served as the commanding officer of Marine Barracks at the Naval Base, Brooklyn, New York; the commanding officer of Marine Barracks at Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Maine.
Colonel Carr's personal decorations include the Silver Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat v device, the Purple Heart, and various other medals and decorations.
He is predeceased by his parents, and brother George.
Colonel Carr is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sally (Thompson) Carr of Belfast, Maine; one son, David Carr his wife Kim, and their daughter Anna all of Los Angeles, California; brothers Daniel, Nathan, Bernard, James, Winslow Carr.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at 1 pm at Grove Cemetery in Belfast.
