I became Nate’s neighbor and family member when he married Rachel Bell and moved to Long Lost Farm and Tide Mill Creamery. I admired his steadfast focused energy, endless skills and gentle nature…until action needed to be taken, in which he did so with competence and ease, leaving us glad Nate was there…one specific Autumn Ball memory comes to mind where Nate tackled a huge guy trying to start a fight…and within a few minutes, Nate had eliminated the threat, the fighter went home, and everyone else went back to dancing and having fun.
Another memory I wanted to share was his epic 20 foot tall Tide Mill Creamery sign he pounded and erected for their booth at the farmers market at the Common Ground Fair…it was a masterpiece. I haven’t seen anything close to in the 25 years we have been vending at the fair. It was definitely eye catching and brought lots of customers into their booth. I couldn’t believe the depth and speed in which Nate dug the hole for the pole and almost single handedly erected this huge sign offering their kefir, yogurt, and Greek yogurt parfaits. Although I’m sure there were many other people helping, Nate always seemed to have this “larger than life” presence about him making those in his company feel that no matter what happened, you would be fine as long as Nate had your back.
As a fellow farmer, I felt a connection through a commonality of the blood, sweat and tears it takes to run a farm and farming business. The masterpieces he created with the land, their homestead and livestock stewardship is inspiring. He will be deeply missed. I hope you find some comfort in hearing how special Nate was to people not part of your immediate family and what a gift it was to know him for the time that I did.
My love to you,
Carly DelSignore

To Nate's family, I extend my sincerest condolences on Nate's untimely death. I had the privilege of being a teacher at Mount View and enjoying Nate as a student. In 28 years of education, I had many wonderful students but a very few I remember with special fondness. Nate is among these. He was a time traveler of sorts, able to see people and events in the context of their times, places, and histories. He made profound connections among events and joyful connections with his classmates, always with a droll wit and wisdom beyond his years, akin to that of Abraham Lincoln. I cherish his memory, as I know you do. Through tears . . .
