Obituary of Rachel Alma Young

LINCOLNVILLE — Rachel Alma Dougherty Young passed away on April 25, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 1, 1938 (Happy New Year!) the daughter of Arthur Ray and Alice (Waterman) Dougherty of Camden.

Rachel went to grade school in Camden and attended Camden High School.

Rachel married Bernard Ivan Young of Lincolnville on June 9, 1955. They built their first home in Lincolnville where they lived until moving into the farmhouse across the road that had been owned by his family for generations. In 1982 they sold the farmhouse and moved down the road on a few acres that were part of the original farm property, where she lived until about a year before her death.

Rachel’s hands were full, raising six children and attending all their events and then the events of their children. She loved her time “greeting” people at Drake’s, camping in Fryeburg, summers at Camp Moosehorn, painting with Nancy, breakfast and dinner with good friends at local restaurants, riding around with Bernard “checking the roads and seeing what her family was up to.” Family gatherings on holidays and birthdays were a must and she would always bring her deviled eggs to share. She loved being out and about and was always up for an adventure!

Rachel will be remembered for the love she had for all of us. Even in her last days, she would ask “What’s going on in Lincolnville and what’s the gossip?”

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard, on October 22, 2022; brother, Carlton Dougherty and his first wife, Myrna Curry Dougherty, and his second wife, Iris McKay Dougherty, her brother-in-law, Lewis A. Young, and his wife Candace; her sister-in-law, Jackie Y. Watts, and her husband Maurice; and her brother-in-law, Peter Rolerson. She is survived by her six children: daughter Cathy Wade and her husband John; son Steven and his wife Ronny; daughter Kim Dougherty; son Todd and his wife Suzanne; son Scott and his wife Jane; daughter Stacey Parra and her husband Thomas; nine grandchildren: grandson Michael Rossiter and his wife Sarah; grandson Darren Rossiter and his wife Briana; grandson Kyle Young and his partner Amber; grandson Derek Young and his wife Michele; grandson Wyatt Parra; granddaughters Breyn, Chelsea, and Bailey Young; granddaughter Nicole Young and her husband Brendan Pratt; and ten great-grandchildren: Preston, Avery, and Sophia Rossiter; Brysen Rankin; Jaylen Young; Addie, Boden, and Colby Pratt; and Lucas and Lillian Young; as well as her sister Priscilla Patten and her husband Keith; two sisters-in-law: Rosemary Winslow and her husband George; and Judith Rolerson. She also leaves behind her best friend Julianne Hyatt whom she shared many adventures with over the years.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Lincolnville Historical Society, PO Box 204, Lincolnville, Maine 04849.

A private burial will be held.
