Obituary of William C. White
William C. White, 71, of Belfast Maine passed away Dec. 14, 2023 after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis, William was a survivor of both colon cancer and a heart attack.
He was born in Belfast to William G. and Jessie White on Oct. 30, 1952. Shortly after he moved with his parents to Bermuda, returning to Belfast when he was 7. He graduated from Belfast Area High School in 1970 and went on to attend the University of Maine at Orono. At the University of Maine William asked out his former classmate Cindy Gould. William and Cindy married in 1974 and for a number of years moved between Maine, New York, and Iowa following the Transcendental Meditation movement before settling down in Maine and having the first of 3 children.
William worked for many local newspapers, freelance publishers and graphic artists over the years; earning a trade as a typesetter. In 1985 he started his own typesetting business, Typeworks, where he worked with several local businesses including Downeast Magazine. Working from home William was always present in his family’s life managing his business and raising his children with Cindy.
William enjoyed spending time in his retirement with the occasional typesetting job, gardening with his wife, and taking care of their wooded homestead. He had an avid love of computers which he used well into his senior years always, staying current with technology. William was still working on his longtime publishing partnership with Bard College on the anthology Conjunctions, which had spanned over 30 years and more than 60 editions in his tenure.
He was a devoted husband, father, son, and was always eager to help his children with anything they needed.
William was predeceased by his father and mother; and his uncle Chester. William looked after his mother for many years when his father passed; she was a polio survivor and lived a long life to the age of 103.
William is survived by his wife Cindy; his children Nathan, Hillary and Eben and a large amount of extended family on both sides of the aisle; leaving behind many who deeply cared for him.
In accordance with William’s wishes no immediate services will be held. A private internment will be held with his family in the spring. In lieu of flowers and donations William’s family would appreciate a planting in his memory. Condolences and memories may be shared on his tribute wall.
