Obituary of Alma E. Putansu
ALMA EMILY PUTANSU, 94, of Belfast, after a long, full life, she passed away at Waldo County General Hospital on November 9, 2023. Alma was born on October 18, 1929 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Alma was the third of six children born to John and Olga Putansu. John served in the Navy leading the family on many adventures, such as traveling by ship from New England to California. Afterwards, the family moved back to New England to reside at a family farm in Waldoboro. This is where Alma's love of animals began. She specifically enjoyed collecting the eggs every day. The family moved to St. George where Alma had fond memories.
She then moved to Belfast and became a resident of High Street Group Home. Upon the closing of the High Street Group Home, Alma moved to a family centered environment where she lived with a loving caregiver and special friend for the last years of her life. She was an active member of the Belfast community for over 40 years, attending many civic events and being an active participant in her church.
Alma was determined and committed to working through Group Home foundation and Little River Apparel, retiring at an advanced age. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time at Spectrum Generations and socializing with friends. Her love of animals continued throughout her life, with her favorite animal being a cat, earning her the title of 'cat lady.' Although, in recent years she developed a love for goats, specifically Sammy and Eddie.
Alma was predeceased by her parents, John & Olga and siblings, John, Helen, and an infant brother. She is survived by her brother, Harold of Warren; her sister, Mary of Belfast; niece Kathleen Williams and family of Warren; and her cat, Rocky.
A celebration of life will be held on December 2, 2023 at 2pm at the Belfast United Methodist Church. Her internment will be held privately with family and close friends in St. George.
In honor of Alma's memory, donations can be sent to PAWS Animal Adoption Center at PO Box 707, Rockport, ME 04856.
