Obituary of Jean C. Joy

Please share a memory of Jean to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jean Carolyn (Smith) Joy, 87 passed away on October 26th, 2023, at home, surrounded. by her family. She is predeceased by her Parents, Henry Charles Smith and Agnes Annie (McLaurin) Smith and (3) siblings as well as her husband Malcolm Earl Joy II and her eldest child Malcolm “Earl” Joy III. Jean was born on December 1st, 1935, in Flea Hill, N.C. now known as Eastover. She came into this world so very small, fragile, delicate and simply precious, weighing a total of 3 lbs. There was doubt she would even survive. However, she had determination even way back then. God knew she was meant to be in this world to make a difference and there is no doubt that she did just that. This woman we call: Mom, Gram, and GG-Maw has made a huge impact on each and every one of us and undoubtedly on so many more. Her family meant the world to her, and you knew it. She always had a twinkle in her eye, a smile on her face and her laugh was contagious. She was the most kind, generous, loving, and caring person. She was full of hugs, and you never left her house hungry. This woman could cook for an army. Her kitchen was always going from sunrise to sundown, you could guarantee she was cooking to feed those she loved. She always had a house full and had a habit of "making" memories to cherish. There isn’t anyone that Jean came into contact with that was not positively impacted in their lives. She made friends everywhere she would go and strike up a conversation with anyone her path may cross. Especially on her many walks along the Belfast Waterfront, where she enjoyed walking or sitting and listening to the local music events that were held there. She worked many places over the years. Locally, she worked at Reny’s as well as Community Connections (BFLI) She was very loved by her community. She loved to tell us stories of her many adventures throughout her life. She had traveled to and even lived in many different states in her lifetime. She moved over 30  times. She then settled down for roughly 30 years in her Big Red House in Searsmont, Maine. Many happy memories occurred here for the entire extended family. This was a place we all gathered often for numerous family occasions. She is survived by her (4) children: Charles Joy & wife Cynthia, Sandra Byrd & husband Timothy, Harold “Scott” Joy, and Laurie Roy & husband Ronald. Grandchildren: Jennifer LaRochelle & husband Justin, Allison Joy & SO Christopher, Joshua Joy, Amanda Huff & husband Travis, Ashley Byrd & SO Ryan, Christie Greene & husband Andrew, Angela Wentworth & husband Michael, Toni Joy, Steven Joy & wife Lindsay, Abby Byrd & SO David, and Sarai Serface & husband Joel. (27) Great-Grandchildren and (4) Great Great-Grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews, including one special niece she cared for over the last several years, Lisa Gail Guy formerly of Eastover, NC.
