Obituary of John Samuel Whitman
John S. Whitman, 96, of Hadley Mill Road. After a brief battle with illness at the end of a wonderous life, John passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Sussman house in Rockport, ME.
He is survived by a sister, Joyce of Lunenburg, MA., six children, Carole E. Whitney, and Robert S. Whitman, both of Jackson, ME, Kathy L. Whitman of Groton, MA, Steven J. Whitman, and James M. Whitman, both of Lunenburg, MA, and Susan M. Whitman of Leominster, MA., as well as two grandsons, Sam of Jackson, ME, and Frank of Groton, MA.
He was born in Fitchburg, MA on April 26, 1927, the son of John and Selma (Lehto) Whitman, and grew up in Townsend, MA. He had resided in Townsend for 79 years before moving to Maine in 2006.
He served in the U.S. Army from 7-13-1945 to 12-29-1948. He was a proud Veteran. He worked for P.J. Keatings in Lunenburg, MA for 39 years until officially retiring in 1989.
He joined AA in 1982, he was sober for 40 years. He prided himself in his commitments, speaking to others, being very socially able, helping people with sobriety, etc. John was a member of Crossroads to Calvary, Apostolic Church in Morrill, ME.
He enjoyed being in his workshop, fixing cars or tinkering, etc. Every summer he would enjoy going up north to do some fishing and sightseeing.
A private service is planned at Forest Hills Cemetery, Fitchburg, MA.
