I so enjoyed my times with Mary Alice and with her brother, Chandler. Before his stroke, Chandler faithfully visited her every month. When Chandler could no longer drive, it was my honor to to take him to visit his sister.
Mary Alice was always lovely.....and had a natural elegance. She called me Chandler's "lady friend", which I always loved.
One of my favorite stories, I have already shared with Jane. But it makes my heart smile, so I will share it here as well.
Chandler had a wonderful photo of the three siblings....Mary Alice, Chandler, and Murray, taken back in the 1930's, when they were all very young children. It was the last photo of them that was taken by their mother, who passed away not long afterward.
Chandler was looking forward to showing the photo to Mary Alice....expecting that she would comment on how young and cute they were!
She looked at the photo....and pointed to the house behind....and said, pretending to be stern, but with a sparkle in her eyes.... "Do YOU remember this window?" Chandler looked puzzled...and he said, "No....why?". Mary Alice continued. "Well....I remember it VERY WELL! You and Murray LOCKED ME OUT OF THE HOUSE.....and I was knocking on the window to get in....so hard....that I broke it!!! Our father was NOT happy with this, and he was determined to teach me a lesson.... so he showed ME how to replace the window!"
We all got a good laugh out of her story and the way she told it.
I was so impressed that she never told her Dad that her brothers had deliberately locked her out.
And she learned very young how to replace a broken window!
I will always remember Mary Alice with great fondness....and how Chandler honored her.
