Obituary of Glenn E. Hills
Glenn Edgar Hills, 102, of Belfast passed away peacefully on April 16, 2022, at the Harbor Hills Center where he resided for the past two years. He was loved by many in the assisted living unit at Harbor Hill. He was born June 17, 1919, in Belfast, son of Herbert Rufus and Mildred G. (Lamson) Hills.
He attended Belfast schools and graduated with the class of 1937. His first marriage was to Alice Staples in November, 1937. They had four daughters, Nancy L., Beverly A., Betty J. and Sandra M. Hills. His second marriage to Genevieve Dunbar was in November, 1948, and they had three children, Pamela L., Gary G. and Patricia R. Hills. He was a good husband, father and grandfather. He had worked for Mathews Brothers in Belfast for more than 20 years and had his own oil burner business. He was also an evening instructor for oil burner service at the Waldo County Technical Center. Glenn served a total of 36 years in the Army and Air National Guard and retired as Master Sergeant.
Glenn and wife Jenny enjoyed taking many road trips in their native state of Maine. He was an excellent word worker. He enjoyed many hobbies including, mineralogy with Jenny, coin collecting, puzzles and reading about railroads, but his greatest passion was visiting Maine lighthouses and sharing his great knowledge of these lighthouses with others. He had an extensive collection of lighthouse replicas.
Glenn had a positive attitude toward life. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and those who knew him. His laughter will be remembered.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Genevieve D. Hills; father, Herbert R. Hills; mother Mildred (Lamson) Hills; brothers, Raymond E. Hills, H. Richard Hills and Basil A. Hills; sisters, Helen Hills Clements, Evelyn Hills, Marie Hills Clark, Frances Hills Rumney and Ann Hills Bucklin; and two grandsons.
Survivors include his children, Nancy Read of Belfast, Beverly Fowler of Bangor, Betty Cool of Belfast, Sandra McLellan of Searsmont, Pamela Koch and husband, John, of Searsport, Gary Hills and wife, Linda, of Belfast and Patricia Hills Bersaas of Portland, Oregon; brother, Carl L. Hills and wife, Barbara, of Searsmont; 13 grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, including cousins Ola Hills Wight and husband, Nelson, David Hills and Jack Hills.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 am, Friday, August 5, 2022, at Smart Cemetery, Curtis Road, Belfast, with Pastor John Evans officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, August 7, 2022 at 1:30 PM. Those who wish may make donations in Glenn’s memory to the Maine Lighthouse Museum, P.O.
