Obituary of Elwood Leslie Merry Jr.

E. Leslie Merry Jr., 72, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2022, after a long battle with cancer, at his Swanville home surrounded by his loving family. Leslie was born in Belfast, Maine on Aug 14, 1949, to Elwood Merry Sr. and Delores (Surek) Merry.

Early in his life, Leslie worked at W.T. Grant Co. and later at The Republican Journal in Belfast. That was followed by many enjoyable years he spent traveling the roads of eastern Maine selling fish and buying and selling antiques. He loved the travel and the art of the deal. Oftentimes the direction he headed for the day would be determined by what his food cravings were at the time.

The things he valued most were his relationship with Jesus Christ and his family. He loved the Word of God and was passionate about sharing the Gospel with others. His hobbies included working in the woods and taking walks with Wendy where often he would meet and strike up conversations with total strangers. If you knew Les you loved him. His love for Christ was evident by his loving and generous spirit he had toward others. Leslie loved his grandchildren and they loved him. His face would light up every time he saw them. The loss of this amazing man will be felt forever.

Leslie is survived by his mother, Delores Merry of Belfast along with his loving wife of 45 years, Wendy (Palmer) Merry of Swanville. He also leaves two children, his daughter, Trisha (Merry) Chambers of Swanville along with Trisha’s two children, Logan Chipman and Kaylee (Chipman) Wadleigh both of Bucksport, and a son, Dana Scribner, and his wife Kirsten along with their two sons, Jonathan and Andrew Scribner, all of Gorham. He leaves behind three great-grandchildren whom he treasured beyond words, Allianna, Cason, and Ayla Wadleigh, all of Bucksport. He also leaves behind his two brothers, Timothy and wife Pamela Merry, along with Dennis and wife Tina Merry both of Swanville, and his three sisters, Sonja (Merry) Ward and husband Preston, Melody (Merry) Holmes, and Kristi (Merry) Philbrook and husband Alva, all of Belfast, a very special nephew, Aaron Morse of Blue Hill, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father Elwood Merry Sr. and his sister Rebecca (Merry) Merrithew.

It breaks our hearts to lose him, but we know that Heaven will be sweeter with him there.
