Obituary of Joseph Carl Alex

Mr. Joseph Carl Alex, 90, passed away on Thursday, March 17th, 2022 at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, ME. Born in Methuen, MA on November 28, 1931, Joe was the son of Joseph L. Alex and Rixie Maynard Alex. He grew up in Skowhegan, ME. Joe was a graduate of Skowhegan High School class of 1949 and received his BA at the University of Maine, Orono in 1953. At the University of Maine, Joe was a star football player who caught the eye (and she caught his) of a lovely cheerleader. It was this way that Joe met the love of his life, Jean Frances Libby, and the two were married on June 17, 1951. Joe served as an US Navy Officer during the Korean War. He and Jean later moved to Unity, ME, where they made a life at the family farm on Libby Hill and raised a family. Joe was passionate about sports and physical education. Sports were a big part of his life; he played football and Track & Field in high school and college, was an avid weightlifter, and made sharing his love of sports his career. Joe served for over 30 years as a physical education teacher and coach, ending his career at Mount View High School in Thorndike, ME. While at Mount View he coached soccer, basketball, track and field and organized after school opportunities for volleyball and gymnastics. He remained active throughout his life, enjoying golf well into his later years. He also loved to travel. In retirement, he and Jean traveled around the US in their camper visiting friends and family, visiting National Parks and spending many winters in Florida, Arizona, Texas, and California. Joe lived his life to the fullest. First and foremost in his life was his wife, Jean Alex. He never ceased to comment on how lucky he was to have found her. They were life-long partners, having celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary along with their 90th birthday in 2021. Joe had a passion for hunting, fishing, being outdoors, and spending time with his family and friends. He loved planning camping trips and spending days on the lake, boating, fishing, and driving the boat for waterskiing. Joe had a knack for storytelling, playing games, and making connections with those around him. He filled many roles in his life: brother, husband, father, uncle, grandpa, great-grandpa and friend. He loved and was loved by his family and friends. He will be missed by all. Joe is survived by his wife, Jean Alex, and his sons Joseph L Alex and his wife, Joanne, of Old Town ME, Stuart Alex and his wife, Savi of Truro, MA, Daniel Alex and his wife, Shelly, of Belfast, ME, and Meredith Alex and her partner, Juan Sanchez, of Silver Spring, MD, 10 grandchildren: Jessica Keenan, Kathryn Alex, Joel Alex, , Max Alex, Julianna Alex, Cassidy Alex, Aleka Greeley, Blake Alex, Gabe Alex and Rio Greeley, 3 great-grandchildren: Annalise and Jasper Keenan and Maven Ellis-Alex. Joe is predeceased by his siblings, Jack Alex and Charlotte Alex Schneider. Friends and family are invited to send cards and condolences (Jean Alex, Unit E , Maine Veterans Home, 44 Hogan Rd. Bangor ME 04401.) No flowers or donations, please. A memorial service and celebration of Joe’s life is planned for this summer.
