I was in Bub McSpadden's history class at San Francisco Christian school, 1985-89. I really enjoyed him as a teacher. I was, unfortunately, the class clown, but Bub was up for the challenge with a battle of wittiness. I usually lost, and he would often make me drop and do push ups. I think that was one of his 'last resorts' in dealing with me.
Interestingly enough, after high school, I joined the military (did lots of push ups there), and got to take part in many historical events that I imagine he taught his future students about. I was deployed to war zones 9x in 20 years, until I retired in 2012. Every now and then, I thought about him. I remembered his passion for history. I thought it was ironic his pushups prepared me to help shape history in the Persian Gulf (5x), Bosnia (2x), watching the N. Koreans (1x), and one round the world tour to close out my military career.
I just recently found out that he died, as his name popped up on my Facebook page, reminding me it was his birthday today. I am sure he is missed. Best of all, during my military career, I became a Christian, and I have the hope of seeing him again someday.
