Obituary of Linda Lee Newcomb

Please share a memory of Linda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Linda Lee (White) Newcomb, 85, passed away at her home on October 14, 2021 after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her large, loving family who were honored to care for her at home during her final days. Linda was born in Bangor on October 23, 1935, the eldest child of Kenneth and Doris (Murray) White. She attended schools in Hampden, and graduated from Hampden Academy in 1953 where she was a two year member of the National Honor Society, the Editor-in-chief of the yearbook, senior class secretary, D.A.R. Candidate and captain of the basketball team. She married Roger T Newcomb on June 11, 1953, and together they raised four children. When her children were young, Linda was a dedicated homemaker and a great cook. She served as a Bluebird, Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, and was active in her church. In addition to being the matriarch of her own family, Linda was seen as a second mother to several of her siblings. She was very proud that she had been able to take them in to her home in their time of need. As a mom she was stern but fair - a raised eyebrow was usually all she needed to keep us in line. While Roger’s job with IBM required them to relocate to Massachusetts and East Millinocket before settling in Swanville in 1978, they had built a camp on Swan Lake in 1964. After that, Linda would spend every summer at camp with her children. For this, we are extremely grateful… what a gift it was for us to be able to spend summers at the lake! Over the years the camp became a gathering place for four generations of our large extended family. We all have very fond memories of family cookouts, nights around the campfire, friendly horseshoe games, and lots of laughter. After her children were grown, Linda did work outside the home some as both a store clerk and as a CNA. In addition, she went back to school in 1988 at the age of 52 to get her Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Studies and graduated with Highest Distinction. She enjoyed working in the yard and attending her grandsons sporting events. Most recently she enjoyed watching the birds at her feeders and keeping up with the happenings of her large family. She liked to stay informed of current events and hardly ever missed the nightly news or reading the daily paper. She loved to read, and would regularly swap books with her friends in the Thursday morning breakfast club. Linda was predeceased by her husband Roger; sister Kay Carlisle; sister-in-law Frances Newcomb; brothers –in-law Richard Newcomb and William Treworgy; son-in-law Roy Wall; and granddaughter Kelley J. Newcomb. She is survived by her son, Robert Newcomb and his wife Deb; daughters, Cathy Wall, Jennifer Curtis and her husband Rick, and Martha Kulikowski and her husband Bob; grandchildren Jody Corbett and Jeff Wall, Matthew and Alex Newcomb, Dustin and Lindsay Curtis, and Scott and Sam Kulikowski; and nine great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 6, followed by refreshments at the home of Rob and Deb Newcomb. A celebration of life will be held at the family camp at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Linda’s name to MaineHealth Care at Home Hospice Program, 15 Industrial Park Road, Saco, Maine 04072 or Waldo Community Action Partners, 9 Field St. #201, Belfast, Maine 04915.
