I will truly miss you, Mom.
As many who know me, Sandra was like a mother to me. She saw this shy Asian boy with some difficulties and always there to encourage me to overcome the things around me–most of all taught me to always think positively too.
She loves her students during her teaching she was heavily involved with afterschool activities like the BAHS chapter of Future Business Leaders of America where I become one of the members she recommends to join. That is also where I learned to overcome my shyness and later become an officer for our Belfast FBLA chapter by sponsoring dances, craft fair, Christmas Raffle, and others. Even with her leg problem of moving she still took us to attended several leadership workshops during the summer, nothing holds her down. Towards my Senior years, I become the State President of FBLA for the State of Main and wrote my first public speaking piece and would of won 1st place but I ran over for few seconds. Mom was still very proud of me and said it made Dad cry a little, not sure if that’s true or not, Dad never told me the truth on that one so I just believe Mom.
Not many people know that I have left my actual home towards my Senior year in high school because of the negative environment I was going through (not an abusable way just my step-father blame himself on stuff when things go wrong, that somehow affected me and I don’t want to become like that). Mom sees that and out of blue she open her arms and offer me to live with them and be part of the Berry’s. It was one of the hardest decisions I had to choose but the best I ever made. Being part of the Berry’s, Mom taught me what family/love is, which is one of the most important things and that is also how I am raising my family. She has the biggest heart I know, love, and will be missed dearly.

I was shocked and saddened to learn today (2/5) that the best teacher I ever had has died. Mrs. Sandra Berry taught freshman English. Her curriculum was the most varied, highest-quality, jam-packed course ever. We learned Dickens and Shakespeare, with all-class read-alouds. We studied the great poets. We did book reports and read them to the class. We staged our own one-act class play. We learned the finer points of English grammar and usage. Her class had more in it than I could possibly convey.
I had the lead in my school's one-act play ("The Rocking-Horse Winner") and under her guidance, we went to the state finals, held at Bowdoin College's noted Pickard Theater. Years later, when I was serving in the Reagan Administration, she managed to contact me to ask if I would meet with her Future Business Leaders of America delegation in Washington for the national convention. It was my high honor to chauffeur her and the students on my patented "out-of-towners' insider tour" of Washington on several occasions.
Mrs. Berry came from Maine's small but distinguished Finnish-American community. She was born to teach, IMO. She made an indelible impression on me. R.I.P., Sandra Berry. Well and faithfully done.

I believe that Sandra (and Don) Berry moved to Belfast about the same time as my parents and they all started teaching in this district. One of my earliest childhood memories is being at her house as a four-year old child and being fascinated by a Snoopy snow-cone machine and a typewriter (one of which became my most used possession). When I finally encountered her as a teacher during my teenage years she quickly became one of my favorite instructors / advisers as she ran the Future Business Leaders of America. Under her tutelage we organized activities, traveled to conferences and learned about running a business (three skills that have helped me at each phase of my life). She was always quick to laugh while also being incredibly patient and understanding with a wide variety of students (each with their own needs and issues). Mrs. Berry's passing is a huge loss to her family and for all who had the pleasure of knowing her. We are all thinking of them at this sad time.

What can I say about Sandra Berry, when I met her as a sophomore in high school I had no idea what a difference she would make in my life. She feed me knowledge of not just business related but a different way of looking at something and a different way of living. She was such a big influence in my life, if it wasn’t for her I would have never gone onto college, taught adult education nor have the job I have now. Though we didn’t always keep in contact I never forgot her. She made this world a brighter place and will be sorely missed. Thank you Mrs. Berry for everything you did for me. Never remain under anyone’s shadow in life – except for a great teacher’s. This is a piece of wisdom I am happy to follow. Farewell.

Uncle Don, Don Pete, Ilona and Family:
My deepest condolences to you all. I had the good fortune of calling her my Summer Mom as you were so gracious to allow me to stay with you during my summers in high school. The memories I have are held dear to me. I was also a lucky recipient of one of her beautiful wedding cakes. A dry sense of humor - a Rajaniemi trait - as well as her love for all people will be dearly missed. May God bless you and keep you during this difficult time and may you find peace and comfort in your memories. Much Love,
Vickie, Jim, Hannah and Allison
