When I first became a member of IAABO Board 20, Scott was the President. The exam that year was extremely difficult. Many veterans did not pass it and the executive committee members were not pleased with the lack of preparation. However, I did not do as well on the floor test, failing it the first time I tried. I had a second chance and made the most of it. Later, I was socializing with Scott at a PRISM conference at The Samoset. He told me that he was at one of the practice sessions at the Augusta YMCA and upon observing me, made the comment to another executive committee member: "If this guy can't pass the floor test then who the heck can?" He was always supportive and while I never came remotely close to being as good an official as Scott, his kind words helped me become the best that I could be: mediocre and occasionally good. I also had the chance to spend time with Scott at a math conference in Providence (we drove home together with a few other math nerds like ourselves) and a fabulous one in San Diego. When I saw his name on the obituary page today, I was hoping it wasn't the Scott Dyke I really respected. I will never forgot the way he treated me. Rest in Peace Scott.
