I have so much enjoyed his beautiful and soulful carvings in Belfast and beyond. Even without knowing him, he has enriched my life through his art.

It was with much sadness that we read of the passing of Ron Cowan. My husband and I through the years so enjoyed seeing his carvings and work either at the Common Ground Fair or when visiting Belfast. We would go to the park area and just wander around looking at the various pieces set up there. We had our favorites but all were so magical in their own way. We always thought about obtaining a piece for our home in Holden but just seeing the pieces at various locations was fine also. Such a wonderful man and so much talent indeed. The memory of his work will remain in our mind and heart always.

After "Please Be Seated" ended in Belfast some of the items to be sat upon were auctioned off. I always intended to buy one of Ron's works, so I bid on this beautiful bench that Ron made with part of an apple tree, and I won the bid. He delivered it and set it up in my yard. The one to sit most often on it was my cat. Ron told me with a smile that he had intended to overbid my bid, but it didn't work for him, so this bench was supposed to be mine. Such a kind thing to say. We kidded each other a lot. He saw this as a man doing the backward dive and I saw it as a woman doing the downward dog yoga position. I would see Ron and Cherie twice a year, at Arts in the Park and at Commonground Fair. It was always such a delight to chat with both of them. I'm so sorry for the family's sudden loss, and for all of us who found Ron to be such a bright light.

The back of this photo is inscribed, "Artist Ron Cowan, August 2002". This carving was a gift from Ron to my mother, and she treasured it.
Kiki and I are so sad for your loss, Cherie, Ryan, and Ben. We wish we could be there to celebrate Ron's life with you. He was such a talented person, and memories of Ron and his warm and welcoming manner will stay with us always.
Much love, Marge and Kiki

Ron was a good teacher I had many conversations with him my last high school year at BCOPE before i joined the army. I remember if there was anything he needed from the store to prepare lunch he would ask me to go get it because I had my car and license. People like Ron are one of a kind. I will miss seeing him around Belfast.

I am not one for ever being speechless, but when I learned of Ron’s passing - I was certainly stymied. He was a good, calm, and one of the kindest I have ever known. Shakespeare said in King Richard - “my kingdom for a horse,” well I say - “My kingdom for more Ron Cowans.” Rest In Peace my gentle friend. Randy Nichols

Running into Ron anywhere around town was a good reason for one of his fabulous hugs! Yes! His eyes did twinkle! It always made my day when Ron showed up at Arts in the Park and started pounding the metal rods into the ground to support his muses. He was so special and everyone felt it. He and Cherie were mainstays at the event. I am devastated! Smile on, Ron - we will miss you. Chris

We love our carving from Ron. This photo was from July, 2014 and he recently did a “clean up” . We will remember Ron with fondness and an appreciation of his talent. Rest in Peace Ron and may his family know the joy that their loved one has given to so many. Jill and Bill Kulbe

Back when the red and white building got turned into offices and studios, Ron & I shared one of them for a few months. He with his art, me with my jewelry. One of his creations was irresistible to my two boys, visiting the studio with me one day when Ron was away. The piece was a large timber balancing on a base of wood. Ron had figured out a way to make it move lightly, despite its heft. I suspect he liked the juxtaposition of it: weight and weightlessness. My young sons liked it too--so much so that they bumped it wrong and it came undone. I was aghast. I couldn't imagine how I was going to tell Ron they'd ruined his piece. But when the reckoning came, Ron just smiled, said he was sure he could make it right, and was just glad they weren't hurt. I've never forgotten his kindness.

I did not know Mr. Cowan well but I will share a couple memories I have of him. When I first met Mr. Cowan he was an art sub at the middle school. I remember his smile and his love for art. He was so excited to teach us. He had us all draw different faces on a blank paper. I did not want to because I thought I was awfully bad at art. He told me that all art is beautiful in some way and taught me some tricks to help me “improve” my faces (he said they were perfect the way they were). He taught me to enjoy art and to have fun with it. I will miss those art classes. Later in the years, he became my neighbor. He would always wave and smile when he would see us outside or pulling into the driveway and on my worst days, I looked forward to it. I will miss those friendly waves of “hello” and most of all, I will miss his smile and kind heart. My heart goes out to his family. May he Rest In Peace.
