Michael Shaffer

Obituary of Michael Pierce Shaffer

Michael Pierce Shaffer, age 64, passed away Monday, April 20 after trying to kick pancreatic cancer in the face for a long time. Those who knew him know a man who was devoted to his daughters, Alex and Emily, a father whose love knew no bounds, and which took him to innumerable field hockey games (with a bag of apples each time), horse shows, secret and not so secret fishing spots, the canyons of NYC, shooting ranges, concerts and walks in the woods. Michael was born and grew up in Wilmington, Ohio with his parents Ida Mae and Wilbur Pierce Shaffer and his sisters Jeannie and Connie. He attended Wilmington College and later Unity College here in Maine. He had been a mountain guide in the Adirondacks (where he met his wife Linda), a surveyor and site inspector most recently. He loved spending time with friends – glassblowing with David, UMaine hockey games and fishing with Fred, playing music with Norm, volleyball with The Fiddleheads, hiking with Gary and Nancy, and just talking with Beth and the crew and countless others. And, in a testament to any human being, he had an instant, unspoken connection and relationship with any and all dogs that crossed his path. Given the current situation there will be a memorial gathering at a future date and place to be announced. If you would like to be contacted regarding this, please email mpshaffermemorial@gmail.com with current contact information and we will be in touch at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Oncology Department of Waldo County General Hospital or any animal shelter.
