William "Al" Allison Smith, 71, of Islesboro went to be with the Lord on Monday August 10, 2009. He was born on December 18, 1937 on Islesboro the son of Leslie E. and Thelma (Mills) Smith Jr. Al graduated from Islesboro Central High, then joined the Air Force as a security police officer. During his service he flew Presidential escorts as well other duties. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years to Islesboro where he was his happiest on the water. He enjoyed fishing and loved his family and friends very much. He was always there with a helping hand. His "Al hugs" will be greatly missed. He was active in church most recently at Crossroads Community Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school. Al's faith was very important to him, and his Bible was always with him. He is predeceased by his father, and two brothers Leslie E. Smith III, and Benjamin Franklin Smith. Al is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Rita L. Smith of Islesboro; his daughters Linda Smith Durkee of Islesboro, and Toupie Rooney and husband Paul of Northport; his mother Thelma Durkee of Northport; siblings Keith Durkee, Linda Durkee, Thelma Hatch, Cheryl Durkee; four grandchildren Casey William Durkee, Samantha Lee Durkee, Caitlin Lee Rooney, and Colleen Elizabeth Rooney, several nieces and nephews and countless close friends. Graveside services will be held 10:00 am on August 15, 2009 at the Up Island Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, with Pastor David Pouchot officiating. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Crossroads Community Baptist Church Building Fund, 2266 Belfast Road, Lincolnville, ME 04849.
