Obituary of Carleton Davis Greely

Please share a memory of Carleton to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Carleton Davis Greely, 81, passed away at the Island Nursing Home in Deer Isle on Friday, January 22, 2010. He was born in Portland in 1928, the only child of the late Leroy Lewis and Hope Gertrude (Davis) Greely. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Dearing High School in 1947. One of his proudest accomplishments was to have been a member of the USMA Band out of West Point. He also studied photography with Ansell Adams as a young boy. Returning to Maine in 1989 after many years away, Carl became a full time ski instructor and member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America, working at several resorts throughout the Northeast, and in his later days, took great pride in being affectionately referred to as “Captain Grump” by the numerous school children he cared for as a bus driver for local school departments. His hobbies included completing the New York Times crossword puzzle on a daily basis, watching his grandson play baseball, spending as much time with his grandchildren as possible, successfully tracing his complete genealogy back to passengers on the Mayflower, and seeing his Boston Red Sox win the World Series. Carl’s surviving relatives are his “baby” daughter Lynn Hope (Greely) Alexander, her husband James, and his beloved grandchildren, Tye, Sophia, and Monique of Buxton, ME; his son James Carleton Greely of Westwood, MA; and several cousins in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff of the Island Nursing Home for their compassionate care of Carleton during his final days. According to his wishes, a private memorial service will be held by the family to celebrate his life. You may share your thoughts and condolences with the family at lalexander12589@roadrunner.com. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider contributions to the American Diabetes Association.
