Please share a memory of Edgar to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
EDGAR F. ALLEN, 86, died peacefully February 11, 2010 at Waldo County General Hospital, Hospice Unit, with family by his side. He was born December 7, 1923 in Camden, Maine. Predeceased by his mother, Madalienne Russ Allen, Edgar was brought up by his maternal grandparents, Lucius S. and Myra Bell Russ of Lincolnville, Maine. He attended grade school in the one-room schoolhouse where he later took responsibility for starting the wood fire each morning. Edgar attended Camden High School and later worked at the Terry Roller Bushing Co. in Bath helping to support his grandparents and great-grandmother. Edgar enlisted in the Army January 22, 1943 as a medical technician with the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment. He trained at the Hospital Center at Camp Edwards, MA. Edgar participated in the Italian campaign in the battles of Mount Belvadere and the Po Valley giving treatment in the field as a medic and soldier with the 87th Mountain Infantry 10th Division. He was awarded the Combat Medical Badge, Eto Ribbon with two campaign stars, a Bronze Star for skillful performance, a Purple Heart and the Silver Star. Edgar took pride in his role during WWII and supported and attended the 10th Mountain reunions for many years. He also was an active member of the American Legion in Falmouth and Belfast. Edgar worked as an automobile mechanic, a salesman for AAA of Portland and joined the U.S. Postal Service as a mail sorter, truck driver and mechanic. Edgar was an avid hunter, teaching his children and grandchildren to hunt with him. He also enjoyed spending leisure time by the water. He owned camps, first at Sebago Lake, and later at Pitcher Pond in Lincolnville. Edgar’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends shared many fond memories with him boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming, playing cards, eating and celebrating life together. Our stories will be retold many times over as we remember the gift our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, kin and friend gave us - the gift of spending time together. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Lucille B. (Colson) Allen; daughters, Madalienne L. and her husband Laurence Rowell of Falmouth, Patricia I. and her husband Charles Hird of Dresden; a son, Brian E. and his wife Julie Allen of Lincolnville; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; his brother Joseph B. and his wife Carol Allen of Escondido, CA. He was predeceased by his son, Stephen R. Allen who passed away August 2008 and his widow Susan Allen of Westbrook. A service for Edgar will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 27th at the United Christian Church, Lincolnville Center.
