BARBARA (HARVEY) VARNEY, died unexpectedly at her home in Belfast on April 9, 2010. She was born in Swanville on July 5, 1934, the daughter of Elroy and Evelyn (Dyer) Harvey and the wife of Harold Varney. She attended Crosby High School and was a lifelong resident of Belfast. She enjoyed going to the horse races and following politics and world news. In her earlier years Barbara worked for Johnson’s Restaurant and Penobscot Poultry. Barbara especially loved the time she spent caring for her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Harold, her parents and brothers; Elbert Lear, Elmer Harvey, Burton Harvey, and Edward Harvey and sisters; Alfreda Lewis and Wilma Gomm. Barbara is survived by her children, Craig Varney and his wife Susan of Belfast, Kristine Smith and her husband Steve of Worcester, Massachusetts; her grandchildren, Derek and his wife Angela, Matthew, Jennifer, Laurie, and Norman; her great-grandchildren, Brittney, Brandi, Jasmyne, Andrew, Anna and Abigail; her brothers; Tom Harvey of Indianapolis, Indiana, Elroy “Junior” Harvey and his wife Rena of Bowdoin; her sisters, Ida Morin of Keene, New Hampshire, Edith Phillips and her husband Lee of Belfast, Sharon Corbett and her husband Daniel of Augusta; her brother-in-law, Howard “Bud” Varney; her sisters-in-law, Lisa Lear, Hazel Ellis and Virginia Harvey; and several nieces and nephews. Private services will be held later at the families convenience. In lieu of flowers you may make memorial donations to the Maine Veterans Home or the American Cancer Society.
