Obituary of Alden J. Wyman

Please share a memory of Alden to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
ALDEN J. WYMAN, 80, died suddenly the morning of April 28, 2010 at his residence in Smithfield, ME. He had been fighting illness for several years and is now peacefully resting with God. He will be missed by everyone he left behind. He was born in Rumford, ME on April 22, 1930 and was the son of Willard and Maggie Wyman. While attending school, “Ollie” always enjoyed hard work with a future ambition to work on cars and larger engines. He actually drove bus while attending school at the age of 16 while earning high honors. After school, Alden joined the army and in the early 50’s was involved in the European occupational forces in Austria. While there he learned the value of freedom and the difference he could make in other people’s lives. He was called home early due to the death of his father but continued to help the people he touched for the rest of his life. After his service, he went back to his true calling of working on and driving bus. Alden drove commercial buses for 15 years and then drove in the school system for another 30 years. He was appreciated by teachers and students alike for his dedication to his job and also for his pleasant manner and caring personality. One of the things he was proudest of was his trophies he won at bus driving competitions and the year he won 1st place in the State of Maine driving competition. Alden was very involved in the Rumford Baptist Church and later the Baptist Church of Smithfield. He was a member of the Rumford Grange, the Rumford Oddfellows and was also a volunteer for the Gramps Food Service Program for many years and continued with after his move to Smithfield. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Dale. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marion (Gill) Wyman; his children Becky Wyman and Robert Michaud of Smithfield, Mark & Anita Wyman of Limerick and Daniel & Sandra Wyman of North Yarmouth, five grandsons; his sister Shirley Dolloff of West Peru; and 20 nieces and nephews. Local arrangements are under the directions of Meader & Sons Funeral Home at 3 Franklin Street, Rumford, Maine. There will be a graveside service open to all at Demerritt Cemetery on Route 108 in Peru, Maine scheduled for May 23rd at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alden’s name may be sent to ILADS (research for Lyme disease) PO Box 341641, Bethesda, MD 20827 or ILADS.org.
