Obituary of Gilford Daigle

Gilford Daigle, 77, of Caribou, Maine passed away at home surrounded by his family on Monday, November 29, 2010. He was born on July 22, 1933 in Winterville, Maine, the son of David and Yvonne (Raymond) Daigle. He married Della (Rossignol) Daigle of Stockholm on January 5, 1963. Gilford started working at an early age with his father and brothers, growing potatoes on the family farm and during the winter months, logging timber with the help of horses. He also worked for Pinkham Lumber in Ashland and Potato Service in Presque Isle. He was a much sought after handyman in the Caribou area and worked as a volunteer for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Holy Rosary Good Samaritan Thrift Store. Gilford also served honorably in the United States Army. Always giving one-hundred percent of himself to the job at hand, he was known as an exceptionally hard worker. His devotion to his work and his integrity earned him the trust and respect of all those he worked with. Gilford will be lovingly remembered for his generous, compassionate and selfless nature. He was a man of tremendous faith, trusting in the Lord even in the most difficult times. His love for his family was greater than words can express; caring for them was one of his greatest pleasures. People in need, the poor and the sick, also held a special place in his heart. He is survived by the woman he cherished as his wife for 47 years, his precious Della; his two sons Douglas Daigle who cared for him through ten years of illness and David Daigle and his companion Polly Brayall of Caribou; his four daughters Sharon Hodsdon, who also cared for him for ten years, and her husband Kevin, Donna Sturzl and her husband Timothy, Mary Huston and her husband Stan all of Caribou, and Holly Daigle and her husband James of Killeen, Texas; his ten grandchildren Leah, Joey and Marc Sturzl, Brandon, Maria and Alex Hodsdon, Connie (Huston) Anderson and her husband Alex, Jamie, Adam and Sara Huston; two great grandchildren Gwendolyn and Blake Anderson; one sister Isabelle Saucier and her husband Gerald of Caribou; two brothers Daniel Daigle and his companion Rita Boutot, Rosaire Daigle and his wife Lila, a sister-in-law Arlene Daigle of Winterville; and many special nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Willard, Ronald and Normand Daigle of Winterville, and his sisters Joan (Daigle) Lyons and her husband Clifford and Rosalie (Daigle) Kordek and her husband Edward of Plainville, Connecticut. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 10th at 1:00 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Caribou with the Rev. Aaron Damboise officiating.
