Nellie Mabel King, 84, of North Belgrade died Saturday, February 19, 2011. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 25, 1926 in Sidney, Maine, the daughter of Richard Herbert Trask of Sidney and Georgiana (Fogg) Trask of Monmouth, Maine. Mrs. King graduated from Williams High School in Oakland in 1945. She then attended Sisters Hospital of Charity Nursing School in Waterville. She married Allen Richard King of Fairfield in 1948 and resided in Fairfield from 1948 to 1956. In 1956 Mr. and Mrs. King moved to North Belgrade and started a poultry business. During her working life Mrs. King held a variety of nursing positions in the local area. She was employed at Sisters Hospital, Seton Hospital and the Osteopathic Hospital. She also held private duty positions and was a supervisor at Colonial Manor Convalescent Home. In 1986 she retired and cared for her disabled husband, Allen, for many years prior to his death on October 8, 2002. During her life Mrs. King was very active in a number of organizations as well as participated in many civic and community activities. She was a Charter Member of the Emblem Club for many years and a member of the Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Belgrade PTA and was very active in Democratic organizations, Nursing Associations and the Belgrade Widow’s Club. Mrs. King also enjoyed exercising, walking her dog, Kimmie, gardening, reading and spending time with her family. One of her favorite activities was volunteering at the Waterville Muskie Center for three years, where she performed free blood pressure readings for attendees at the center. She often had long lines waiting to get their blood pressure read and she very much enjoyed talking with the people and helping them. Mrs. King is survived by five children: daughter Rita King of New Jersey; daughter Pamela Ambrose and husband Ed of Moultonboro, New Hampshire; son Allen R. King Jr. and wife Dee of Tuttle, Oklahoma, daughter Cynthia Clapperton and husband Jeff of North Belgrade; and son Peter King of Yukon, Oklahoma. She also is survived by thirteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Mrs. King has one deceased brother, Herbert Trask of Tucson, Arizona. She is survived by five brothers: Raymond Trask and Ronald Trask of Oakland; Chester Trask of Waterville; Arthur Trask of Ware, Massachusetts; and Timothy Trask of Orlando, Florida. She is also survived by three sisters: Della Massey of Winslow; Priscilla Dorr of Pittsfield; and Marion Pressey of Unity. A funeral mass will be held on Mrs. King’s birthday, April 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Notre Dame Parish in Waterville. Immediately following the funeral Mass, a graveside service will be held 1 p.m. at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. A celebration of our mother’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. that afternoon at her home at 807 Smithfield Road (Route 8) in North Belgrade. All friends and family are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, our mother has requested that any gifts in her memory be donated to either The Waterville Humane Society, 100 Webb Road, Waterville, Maine 04901 in memory of her loving and loyal companion “Kimmie” or to The Gateway for Cancer Research, 1336 Basswood Road, Schaumburg, IL. 60173. The entire King family would like to acknowledge and deeply thank two groups of individuals: First, to the physicians, PAs, nurses, CNAs, student trainees and the volunteers of Two Central at Maine General Thayer Hospital Campus - the medical care, respect and emotional support you gave to our mother and to us was beyond description. We thank each and every one of you with all of our hearts. You are, indeed, a very special group of people whose love and caring far exceed the duties required by your jobs. Second, the Hospice nurses and CNAs who cared for our mother in her final days were nothing short of angels. Their touches, their words, their tenderness and their deep and sincere caring provided a warm, calm and peaceful transition for our mother. And their comfort and support of us, the family, was beyond anything we ever expected or imagined. The care that you provided to our mother and your gentle and supportive help to us will be precious memories that will remain with us for the rest of our lives. You truly are angels sent from God. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Avenue in Belfast, Maine.
