Gladys (Gay) Horton Hartlieb, 96 1914 - 2011 PORTLAND -- Gay Hartlieb died on Thursday, July 20, 2011, after an extended illness. Gladys was known as Nana Gay to her friends and family. Born on Nov. 6, 1914, Gay lived through the two World Wars and was a child of the 'flappers' of the 20s and the 'Great Depression.' Living for 96 years she had a wonderful and full life. Gay was born in Long Island, N.Y. She was born Gladys Horton and always was very proud of her Swedish ancestry. Her mother was a hat designer in New York City and both her father and mother died at a very early age. Gay married Herb Such during World War II. Like many war brides she worked through the war years while her husband was in Africa and Europe. Alan Such and Carol Ann Such did not see their father until 1945 when Carol Ann saw him for the first time at the age of two: 'Who is that stranger in Mom's bed.' Carol Ann proceeded to hit him over the head with his army boot. Gay was always a person with a smile on her face and a kind word for all. She was the Sear's Credit Department lady on Long Island for many years. Gay loved to dance, play Bridge and travel with her husband. Herb Such retired in 1966. Shortly after 1966, Herb and Gay lost their son Alan in a tragic auto accident. They moved to Vero Beach, Fla., and then moved to Cape Cod in the late 70s. Herb Such died in 1981 in Portland after a long illness. Gay and Herb had moved to Maine in the summers to be close to their daughter and her family. In 1983 Gay married Robert Hartlieb a longtime friend who had recently lost his wife to cancer. As old friends Bob and Gay had much in common. They married in Cumberland and lived in Brunswick in the summer and Sarasota, Florida in the winter. Bob had retired from NY Life and the devoted couple easily made new friends in Maine and Florida. Gay was devoted to her daughter Carol and the family. She is survived by her daughter Carol Ann Bouton and husband Dale C. Bouton; and Dale's sister Patricia Bouton of Cumberland- Foreside. She is survived by her grandchildren Clay Bouton and his wife Wendy Bouton; and her two great-grandchildren, Anna and Reed of Yarmouth. She is survived by her grandson Alan Such and his family of West Islip, N.Y. By marriage she is survived by her step daughter Laura Hartlieb and her step-son Jeff Hartlieb. Gay's last years were spent living with her husband Bob Harlieb at Birchwood Assisted Living in Portland. Bob and Gay were married almost 25 years. Bob Hartlieb died three years ago and the family would like to thank Birchwood and the staff for the wonderful care she was given after Bob's death. The family would also like to thank Gay's two close friends Peg and Phyllis and the caregivers and volunteers of Hospice of Southern Maine for their daily care and support. There will be a celebration of Gay's life on Thursday, July 28, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Birchwood Assisted Living at 86 Holiday Rd., off Canco Road, in Portland. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions in Gay's memory to: The Hospice of Southern Maine 180 Rt. One Scarborough, Maine 04074 Gladys (Gay) Horton Hartlieb
