Obituary of Duane A. Hurd
Duane A. Hurd, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 16, 2011, at Maine General Medical Center in Waterville. Duane was born in Madison, Maine on April 29, 1925 to Omar and Marguerite (Barley) Hurd.
While attending Madison High School , at age 17, he enlisted in the Navy to serve in WWII. After serving, he returned to Madison High to finish his high school education and later graduated from Colby College in 1951. During his schooling at Colby, Duane married Carol Jean Seams and started their family of five children, later adopting a sixth child. He spent the bulk of his professional career with Quincy Mutual Fire Insurance Company, where he later retired.
In 2005, Duane married Marjorie “Margie” Shannon and had a beautiful summer wedding. They enjoyed summering in Maine and warm winters in Florida for their six years together. They had many friends in Florida at Port St. Lucie. Duane loved golfing, playing tennis with the reputation of ‘The Rocket’ and watching the Patriots play football. He also spent many summers at his lakeside camp in Embden with family and friends.
He was previously deceased by his first wife of 47 years, Carol Jean Hurd; his two biological sons Brian and Eugene Hurd, and adopted son Gerry.
Duane is survived by his second wife Marjorie (Shannon) Hurd, his children, Stephen and wife Tara Hurd, James and wife Rebecca Hurd, his daughter Dana and husband Edward Holt; as well as nine loving grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, August 27th at Evergreen Cemetery in Solon followed by a reception at 2 p.m. at VFW in Madison for family and friends.
