Obituary of Agnes Connelly Allen

Agnes Connelly Allen, 95, of Tenants Harbor, ME died on November 25, 2011 at The Anderson Inn, Quarry Hill in Camden after a long illness. She was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on July 12, 1916 to James and Irene (Burke) Connelly. She graduated from Wilby High School and St. Mary’s Hospital Nursing School. She married Burleigh Allen in 1940, and in addition to raising her children at the family home in Prospect, Connecticut, she worked as nurse in the Waterbury area. She also was a dedicated nursing care giver for her extended family and neighbors. Upon retirement in 1978 they moved to Tenants Harbor, ME where they enjoyed both life in the village and spending time on Spectacle Island, the long time family property. In addition to being a warm, supportive mother, grandmother and friend, she was an avid gardener and lover of all things associated with her Irish heritage. She was a member of Saint Bernard’s Parish in Rockland. She is survived by two of her children, Nina Cunningham of Tenants Harbor, ME and Christopher Allen of Essex, Vermont; seven grandchildren, Cynthia Delaney of Branford Connecticut, Matthew Allen of Prospect, Connecticut, Stephen Allen of St. Joseph, Michigan, Thomas Allen of Prospect, Connecticut, Mark Allen of Los Angeles, California, Melissa Allen of Woodbridge, Connecticut and Mariah Cunningham, of Gorham Maine; as well as six great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her god daughter Janet Lutkus. She was predeceased by her eight siblings, her husband Burleigh and her son Paul. In keeping with Mrs. Allen's wishes there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, contributions to her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter (383 US Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074). The family would like express appreciation to the staff at Quarry Hill and special thanks to her primary CNAs, Millie Benner and April Thornburn, as well as Eileen Skolds, nurse and friend.
