Obituary of Barbara Moore Kuby

Barbara “Pete” Moore Kuby died at Harbor Hill Health Care Facility in Belfast, Maine on April 21, 2012. She was born June 20, 1922 in Vancouver, Washington. Her father, Major General Bryant Moore, was a career military officer and superintendent and instructor at West Point. He and her mother Margaret King were born in Ellsworth, Maine, and her grandfather Edward Moore owned a drugstore there. Pete’s ancestors lived for many generations in Maine. Pete spent her childhood in Washington, Hawaii, Kansas, Illinois, New York, and Georgia due to her father’s military service, but always returned to Maine in the summer. She graduated in 1943 from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in Spanish. She met Lt. Andrew Ewing Kuby Jr. in New York City during World War II and they were married on Governors Island, New York, on March 24, 1945. They raised their three sons in Evanston and Woodstock (Bull Valley), Illinois, before moving to Belfast in 1973. Pete and her husband “Andy” loved living in Belfast; they loved their many wonderful friends and the sense of community in Belfast. Pete was very active in the Belfast Historical Society, Waldo County Hospital Aid, Friends of the Library and the Belfast Garden Club. For many years she participated in the book reading program for young children at the Peirce Elementary School. Pete was also an avid bridge player, gardener, golfer, reader and totally charming entertainer. Although her memory faded, she never lost her great sense of humor and timing. Survivors include sons Andrew E. Kuby III (Leslye Winslow) of Riverwoods, Illinois, Bryant Moore Kuby (Deborah Small) of Belfast, Maine, and Thomas Moore Kuby (Patrice McDonald) of Ridgecrest, California; grandchildren Andrew Kuby IV, Caroline Kuby, and Meredith Phillips; great-grandson Alexander Kuby; sister Margaret Wood (the late William Wood) of Gladstone, Missouri, and cousin Geary Tibbets of Belfast, Maine. She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew Ewing Kuby Jr., her parents General Bryant and Margaret King Moore. A remembrance and open house will be held on Monday, June 25th, 2012 from 3 to 6 PM at the home of Geary Tibbetts, 50 Ocean Street, Belfast. Interment of her ashes will be at Grove Cemetery, Belfast. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Stone Soup Kitchen, 9 Field Street #224, Belfast, Me 04915 or the Belfast Historical Society and Museum, 10 Market Street, Belfast, Me 04915.
