Obituary of Dorothy May Gernert
Dorothy May (Weis) Gernert, 94, of Belfast, Maine passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, January 21, 2013 at CEDARS in Belfast.
She was born April 9, 1918 in Newark, New Jersey, the only daughter and second child of William Henry and Anna Victoria (Buhl) Weis. “Dot” was a 1935 graduate of Irvington High School in Irvington, New Jersey. She was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark until she married Lawrence H. Gernert, her husband of 65 years who passed away in 2006. They were married on March 15, 1941 and spent most of their married life in Chatham, New Jersey. They retired to the coast of Maine in 2004, as it had become the gathering place for their family.
Mrs. Gernert remained a member of Chatham United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, spending time with her family and completing crossword puzzles. She was accomplished in the various art forms of decorative stitching, including quilting, knitting, needlepoint and sewing, and she leaves behind a legacy of many handcrafted treasures.
She is survived by three children: Gayle Denaco and husband, Parker, of Dover, New Hampshire; Gary Gernert and wife, Barbara, of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania; and Glenn Gernert and companion, Barbara Milne, of Middleton, Wisconsin. She is also survived by a brother, Edward Weis of Palm Bay, Florida; ten grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Weis.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CEDARS, a 501(c)(3) public charity founded in 2004 to ease the difficulties of dying by providing 24 hour family like care in a private home environment. Checks may be made payable to: “CEDARS” and mailed to P.O. Box 204, Belfast ME 04915.
