Please share a memory of Veula to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Veula Emerson Reed, 100, of Edgecomb, died peacefully on the morning of July 27, 2013 at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor. A lifetime resident of Edgecomb, Veula was the daughter of James Hazen Emerson and Annie S. Emerson. In 1929, Veula married Kenneth Parker Reed of Edgecomb. Early in her life Veula worked for the estate of Professor Ripley. In the 1940s she began a 30-year career as part owner and operator of Emerson’s Smorgasbord, a local favorite of diners for many years. She was known for the outstanding meals she cooked for the restaurant. People came from miles away to enjoy her Swedish meatballs, pastries and the other homemade food. Although she never drove a car, she was always a willing passenger. She traveled across the country with her husband and over the years spent many winters in Florida. She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Parker Reed in 1967, her daughter Barbara Reed Stanley in 2002 and her daughter-in law Billie Hammond Reed in 2001. She was also predeceased by her brother, Harry Emerson and her sister, Edith Emerson. She is survived by her sons, Robert N. Reed of Edgecomb and Herbert E. Reed Sr. of Florida; grandchildren, Victoria Bishop of Georgia, Peter Stanley of Houlton, Catherine Pendergast of Westport Island, Elizabeth Deniger of Boothbay, Amy Gittens of Barbados, Roseanne Field of Nevada, Nancy Loechel of Missouri, and Herbert Reed II of Florida; and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate Veula’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the North Edgecomb Cemetery Fund, c/o the Edgecomb town office.
