Obituary of Rodney Harold Childs

Rodney Harold Childs, 77, of Lord Road, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 3, 2013, at his home with his dog by his side. He was born in Springfield, Vt., on Aug. 4, 1936, the son of the late Leighton and Rachael (Barrows) Childs. After graduating from Springfield High School in 1955, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He served in Vietnam and several other duty stations throughout his 20+ year Naval career. In 1974, he retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Later he was employed at Carl Subler's Trucking, Tim's True Value Hardware, Tory Hill Store and 3D's Variety. He was a member of Kora Temple, Legion of Honor, Buxton Lodge #115, York Royal Arch Chapter, St. Amand Commandery #20, Scottish Rite, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #679, American Legion #197, VFW Post 771, and Elks Lodge #1597. He also remained active in the Shriners and participated in many parades as part of the Honor Guards. After retirement, Rodney enjoyed taking care of his homestead, hunting and fishing with friends and family, and venturing to the Oxford Casino to spend his 'children's inheritance.' His greatest achievements were being a husband of 43 years, and a loving and caring father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Joyce, Jean and Melvin 'Butch.' Rodney is survived by his beloved wife, Marge (Duprey) Childs; children, Kim Adams of Buxton, Tami Cawood and her husband Jim of Buxton, Randy Childs and his wife Patty of Florida, Charles Adams and his wife Nicole of Buxton, John Childs of Florida; siblings, Thomas Childs and his wife Linda of New York, Leighton Childs and his wife Lee of New York, Janet Williams and her husband James of New York, James Childs of New York, and Judy Anderson and her husband Andy of North Carolina; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will always be remembered as being very personable, enjoying a good conversation and being an active member of his community. A graveside service with Military and Masonic Honors will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m., at South Buxton (Tory Hill) Cemetery with a reception to follow.
