Obituary of Marie McEnaney

BAR HARBOR – Marie L. McEnaney died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 at Sonogee Rehabilitation and Living Center in Bar Harbor, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 5, 1932 in New York City to Austrian immigrants, Johanna and John Rieser. Marie graduated from St. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic High School in Manhattan. Painting and drawing were a passion of hers from an early age. She completed courses in the Arts Programs of Hunter College and Fordham University. Marie married William J. McEnaney on July 13, 1957 and moved to Levittown, NY where they began to raise their family of four boys. They looked forward to camping at MDI Campground each summer, and in 1976 Marie and Bill moved their family to Somesville. They spent many summers sailing the Maine coast and camping throughout the state with their sons. Marie began working at the Jackson Laboratory in the 1980’s and retired in 1995. After retiring, Marie joined a group of artists who formed the Flounder Society Arts Co-Op, which set up a gallery in Bar Harbor. Her watercolors focused on the beautiful vistas of Mount Desert Island and appeared in galleries throughout eastern Maine. Marie was predeceased by her husband, William. She leaves behind a sister, Alice, of Mt. Desert; sons, William Jr. and his wife Nancy of Bellingham, WA, John and his wife Carol of Saco, Tom of Pownal, and Patrick of Mt. Desert; grandchildren, Alison, Brian and Cara, and a great granddaughter, Layla. A mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Bar Harbor at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday February 8th with a reception to be held immediately thereafter at the church. Marie received exceptional and compassionate support from Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, who would be pleased with any donations in Marie’s name at 14 McKenzie Avenue, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
