Obituary of Maynard R. Marriner
MAYNARD R. MARRINER, 99 of Searsmont (recently Belfast), passed away April 5, 2014 at home. He was born in Searsmont, July 12, 1914 to Albert L. and Harriett Ella (Burgess) Marriner.
He purchased his first livestock at age 14, a pair of oxen, which he cared for and trained himself. During the depression in the 1930’s, he moved to Connecticut where he met his future wife. They both trained and then worked as LPN’s. They returned to Maine in 1940. He owned Marriner’s Dairy for many years, receiving the commendation of Dairy Farmer of the Year in 1964. After a fire destroyed the dairy, he opened a sports shop, which fire also destroyed. He then managed a body shop in Camden for several years. At age 59, he established a new business as an appraiser for several insurance companies, from which he retired in 1980.
For 14 years, he and his wife Evelyn summered in Searsmont and wintered in Lakeland, Florida. He enjoyed golfing, shuffleboard, checkers, cribbage, bowling, reading, music, and tending his gardens. He liked to stay busy, right up to three weeks prior to his death. His hobbies included whittling, stained glass, and many projects in his workshop.
He was a lifetime member of Searsmont United Methodist Church, where he served many years on the board of directors. As a 65-year member of the Quantibacook Masonic Lodge #129, he was still attending meetings at age 99. Maynard was very active in the Town of Searsmont, where he served as a selectman, schoolboard member, and a Waldo County Deputy Sheriff.
Maynard was predeceased by his parents; his wife Evelyn in 2011; his son Vincent Marriner in 2010; a brother Harry Marriner; three sisters Olive Fossett, Christina Raynes, and Virginia Marriner. Survivors include his daughters, Phyllis Farrington of Rochester, New Hampshire, and Nancy Fenderson of Brunswick; his grandchildren, Kevin Jenckes, Lisa Greenwaldt, Christopher Marriner, Candy Rowell, Jennifer Copp, Lindsey Fenderson, Joshua Fenderson, Matthew Fenderson, and Zachary Fenderson; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Avis Beech, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be announced a later date at Searsmont United Methodist Church. At Mr. Marriner’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.ripostafh.com.
