Obituary of James H Lacourse

James Harold Lacourse, 89, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on July 3, 2014 in Scarborough, Maine. “Jim” was born to Joseph and Irene Lacourse on December 28, 1924. He attended Robert E Fitch High School in Groton, CT and at the outbreak of WWII, enlisted in the Navy on his 17th birthday. He is survived by his three sons, twins James of Scarborough and John and wife Theresa of Frenchville, Maine and his youngest, Jeffrey and wife Fatiah of Dover, NH. He was grandfather, or more affectionately known as “Gampie” to eight grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Jacqueline Tilton of Kittery, Maine, whom he met after returning from WWII where he served on submarines in the Pacific Theater. In the late 1950’s while on Submarine patrol in the Mediterranean, Jim was selected for new construction on the USS Patrick Henry. He completed three patrols on the USS Patrick Henry and eventually retired at the South Portland Naval Reserve Training Center in 1964 after serving his country for twenty years. After retiring from the Navy, Jim went to work at St. Francis College in Biddeford, Maine as a Physical Plant Director. In 1971 he retired from the college, and continued to work holding various positions in the Scarborough school system. Together, Jim and Jackie raised their three boys with much love and affection and as the years passed, they welcomed their grandchildren and great grandchildren with warmth, humor and humility. Through the years, many friends passed through their home, and Jim could always be counted on to lend a helping hand. When he wasn't traveling with his RV, he enjoyed gardening, playing cards, building his home and being a grandfather. His family was blessed by his strength, and those he knew and loved were touched by his kindness. He is eternally at peace and will be remembered by many with a smile. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel at the VA Cemetery in Augusta, Maine on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 12:00 pm. Per request, there will be no Wake. Donations to the American Cancer Society in memory of Jim would be greatly appreciated as a touching tribute to the wonderful man he was and the long life he lived. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast
