Obituary of Alfred M. Carrigan
ALFRED M. CARRIGAN, 72 of Benton, Maine, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2014 surrounded by family and friends. He was born on May 19, 1942, the son of Melvin M. Carrigan and Agnes Vining. Fred joined the U.S. Army in 1959, serving as a wheeled and track vehicle mechanic. He completed three tours in Germany, two tours in Korea and many State-side assignments. Fred was promoted in 1979 to the rank of Master Sergeant and became a Motor-pool Maintenance Non-Commissioned Officer. Fred retired from the Army in 1982 after completing 23 years of honorable service. Upon retiring, Fred worked as a heavy diesel mechanic.
His passion was riding his motorcycle and Can Am Spyder. His summers were spent burning up the roads of Maine or New Hampshire and traveling up Mt. Washington. Fred could always be found at Dunkin Donuts for his “rest breaks” catching up with his family and friends where he was best known as Uncle Fred. His other loves were his dogs, Mercedes, Jasper and Moxie.
Vacation was spent traveling around the United States, going coast to coast visiting his old duty stations and the excuse to visit their son wherever he was stationed state-side. On one particular trip, he and Glenys “kidnapped” her mother with her thinking she was visiting for a week, instead they brought her to Amish country.
He was a proud lifetime member of the VFW and DAV, a member of the American Legion and Legion Riders, the United Bikers of Maine and the United States Army Brotherhood of Tankers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Renee Wentworth; and his best friend William Armistead, MSC (retired). He is survived by his spouse and long-time sweetheart of 23 years, Glenys; step-children Bill Linnell Jr., Dennis Linnell, Heidi Meunier, Kenny Ray Richards and Tanya Kreft; grandchildren Willey Meunier, Bethany Muenier, Brandy Armour; several great grandchildren; his siblings, Frank Carrigan, Fred Carrigan, Rachel Robinson, Donna Allen and Diane Auble; and his best friend Col. (retired) Fred Heath.
There will be a summer graveside ceremony on June 20th with military honors and a full escort of motorcycles of family and friends. Arrangements under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast. Memories and condolences may be offered to the family at www.ripostafh.com.
