Obituary of Karin Ludewig
Tenants Harbor — Karin Ludewig, a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 33 years, died peacefully at the Sussman House Hospice Friday, Jan. 29. Her husband of 24 years, Walter, was holding her hand as she returned to the realm of her Higher Power, whom she chose to call God.
Karin was considered an amazing woman with many talents. She took a double first in ballet and in painting at Tring, a private boarding school for fine arts near London, where she had been born, then came to the United States to enroll in the Parsons School of Design. After a brief career as a fashion designer in New York City, Karin moved to upstate New York, where she became an accomplished equestrian and rode in the Old Chatham Hunt. With her second husband, Walter, Karin operated a horse breeding farm, as well as writing short stories that were published in literary magazines.
Karin loved the country life, especially its beautiful views and taking long walks in the fresh air with her dog, Eeda, as her companion. She excelled at interior decorating, and the design and maintenance of her flower gardens -- she loved books, British television and movies, and to swear at the dinner table. Karin loved Maine and moved to Tenants Harbor to enjoy the Maine coast, which she said reminded her of Britain.
Karin is survived by her loving husband of 24 years, Walter; and three sons of her first marriage, Dr. Stephan Mayer of New York City, his wife, Dr. Elissa Fory, and four children, Philip, Catherine, Chloe and Soren: Roman Mayer of Gulfport, Miss., his wife, Kathleen, and three children, Jane Perrin, Karin and Victoria; and Chistopher Mayer of Gig Harbor, Wash., his wife, Britt, and their three children, Sascha, Somer and Margaux. Karin was also a kind and gracious stepmother to Walter's two children, Christopher Ludewig of Lake Tahoe, Calif., and Heidi Ludewig Collier of Cary, N.C.
The congregation of the Peoples United Methodist Church of South Thomaston will hold a pancake supper in the Church Hall at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, which would have been Karin's 75th birthday. The celebration of Karin's life will be spiritual in nature and all friends of Karin are specifically invited to attend. L'Chaim!
