Obituary of Marian R. Wood

Marian Roberts Wood died peacefully in her sleep on July 17th at the age of 95. She was the last surviving sibling from a close-knit and loving family of 12 children. Marian and her twin sister Mary were born in Brooks, Maine on February 22, 1924. Mary died at the age of 3 and later Marian barely survived a medical emergency affecting her leg. This not only left lifelong physical scars, but also impacted her emotionally as the hospital bills caused her parents to lose their farm. Later the Roberts family moved to Morrill where they started over. Marian eventually recovered from her early health problems to live a very full and robust life. She married Malcolm Wood on May 19, 1945, and despite their constant financial struggles, they provided well for their three sons. She spent many hours cooking on an ancient wood stove in their log cabin home in Belfast and her biscuits were highly praised. She remained very active her whole life and always had a natural curiosity about the world around her. She loved playing games and became a tough competitor at Wii bowling and bingo while spending her final years at Bayview Manor in Searsport. Though she had never been on an airplane her entire life, at the age of 88 she flew across the country to visit two of her sons. Family and faith were both constants in her life. She loved being with her siblings, and the annual Roberts family reunions were a highlight for her. She attended Morrill Baptist Church for over 50 years and developed many close friends. Her steadfast belief was that God and heaven were real and she looked forward to being with her loved ones in the next life. Marian was preceded in death by Malcolm Wood, her husband of 67 years, and by her 11 siblings. She is survived by Rod Wood (wife Jung Ja) of Newburgh, Indiana; Craig Wood of Knox, Maine; and Ervin Wood (wife Ruth) of Eugene, Oregon. She also has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
