Obituary of Michael Joseph Phelan

Michael Joseph Phelan, 70, died peacefully at home on June 26, 2019, with his wife Karen at his side. He was born in Jackson Heights, New York, on January 17, 1949, and grew up in Merrick. Mike and Karen married in 1970. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Italy, England, and Alaska, then moved to Selden, New York, where he worked for the USPS as a carrier and then supervisor. He transferred to Roanoke, Virginia, with his family in 1986. After retiring Mike and Karen moved to Northport, Maine. He worked at the Belfast YMCA and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He loved Prince Edward Island, skiing, hiking, baseball, bowling, gardening, listening to oldies, beer, chocolate, and playing "Chocolate Monster" with his grandchildren. Mike is survived by his beloved wife Karen, daughters and sons-in-law Jennifer and Michael Parker, Lauren and Owen Phelan, and Alysson and Andrew Merritt, sister and her husband Christine and Edward, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Gloria, Ron and Carla, and Susan and Butch, many nieces and nephews, and his precious grandchildren Celia, Elisabeth, Lawrence, Thomas, Declan, Mary Grace, Therese, Emilia, James, Ciaran, Joseph, Nicholas, Michael, Elena, Alice, Gemma, Felicity, Sebastian, Maria, and Charlotte. He was their Papa, and they were the pride and joy of his life. Nothing meant more to Mike than his family. His love for them will be treasured always, and he will be missed beyond words. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 am on Tuesday July 2, 2019 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 81 Court St, Belfast. A private interment will be held at Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta, Me. Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home.
