Obituary of George Andrew Cooper

George Andrew Cooper (Andy), 93 of Belfast passed away peacefully on May 3, 2019. Andy was born July 3, 1925 in Searsmont, the son of Bertha Woodbury Cooper and Frank H. Cooper. He was raised in Belfast and his father was sheriff of Waldo County during his youth. Andy joined the Air Force right out of high school and was stationed in England. He was a radio operator in a B24 Liberator and flew missions over Germany. When the war ended he returned to Belfast and continued his education at the University of Maine where he received his degree in Business Administration. During his life, Andy was an in house accountant at Maplewood Poultry and then Lothrop Ford where he worked for 25 years. After his retirement, he continued to work part time doing accounting, and fully retired at age 86. In 1950, he met the love of his life, Constance Swift. They married in 1953 and settled in Belfast, where they raised their three daughters. They were married for 64 years. They were loving and supportive parents, grandparents and great grandparents. Andy was an avid sports fan. You could always find him watching tennis, golf, baseball or football depending on the season. He enjoyed playing basketball during his school years and then he was always on the golf course in the summer. He was a member of the Northport Golf Club and played on the Men’s League, Twilight League, Scotch Foursome and every Sunday morning. He was also a member of the Belfast Curling Club when it was in its beginning stages. Andy was a very humble and unassuming man, but he was also one of the strongest men his daughters ever knew. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. For those that knew him well, Andy’s nickname was the “agitator”. You never quite knew what he would say, but you always knew he would have a comment, and as you watched the sparkle in his eyes, you knew it would be funny. Andy had this same sense of humor right up until the hours before he passed. Andy is predeceased by his loving wife, Constance, his sister Lucy and his brother-in-law, Clayton Staples. He is survived by his three daughters, Kristin Cooper of South Portland, Candace DiBiase and husband Richard DiBiase III of Belfast, and Kerry Yeaton of Bellingham, MA, granddaughters Erica Barton and husband Todd of N. Attleboro, MA, Jordan DiBiase of Belfast, and grandson Kevin Yeaton of MA and great grandchildren, Katelynn Barton and Trevor Yeaton, as well as many nieces and nephews, especially his sister’s daughter, Andrea Abbott and husband Walter of Gray, Maine. We want to say a special thank you to longtime friend Denise Lindahl for her continued love and support. There will be a graveside service at Grove Cemetery in Belfast on Saturday, May 25th at 11:00 am. The service is for friends and family that would like to celebrate his long wonderful life.
