Obituary of Herman M. Meisner

Herman Meisner November 27, 1936 – January 20, 2019 Herman was born In Mt. Kisco New York and grew up in nearby Pleasantville. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, and went on to complete his doctoral studies at Emory University. He did post-doctoral work at the Max Planck Institute in Marburg, Germany and at the University of Bari in Bari, Italy. In pursuing his career in cell and molecular biology he held faculty appointments at Duquense University in Pittsburgh, Case Western Reserve University, School of Medicine in Cleveland, and University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. His research work was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and other agencies and was published in dozens of peer reviewed journals. When he retired, he pursued his avocation in black and white photography with equal zeal and effort. Herman’s work is displayed in a number of galleries in Mid-coast Maine, and at numerous juried arts and craft shows throughout New England. Herman also found time to engage in community activities wherever he has lived. In Upton, Massachusetts he was a co-founder of the Upton Men’s Club who sponsored many charitable events to benefit the town. He also was elected to the town’s school committee and served on its finance committee. Herman was always a Mainer at heart. After acquiring dilapidated camp on Pitcher Pond in Lincolnville in 1987 and renovating it with his family, Herman settled in Northport permanently with his wife Pat, in 2011. Here, he has been a volunteer at the Camden Snow Bowl for the last several years. He was an avid cyclist, skier, runner, and took up snowboarding at age 65- engaging in these activities right up to the time of his untimely passing. When he wasn’t doing any of the above, one could find him at the Belfast Dog Park, with his beloved rescue, Belle. Herman was preceded in death by his parents Herman E. and Marian Meisner, and first wife, Barbara Surman. He is survived by his spouse, Patricia Selanik Meisner a Warren, Ohio native, to whom he was married for 38 years; his son Stefan Meisner, wife Rachel of Chevy Chase, Maryland and grandchildren Henry, Sadie and Charlie; his daughter, Theresa Dettre, husband Jay of Salt Lake City, Utah and grandchildren Madison and Lindsay and great grandchild Gemma; and his son, Michael and wife Katherine of Napa, California and grandchild Thalia; his brother, Gerald and wife Harol who live in Greensboro North Carolina, and nephew Keir Meisner and niece Jordana Meisner Qualters. There will be no calling hours, but there will be a celebration of Herman’s life, work and art on Saturday, March 2, 2019, from 2:30 - 4:30 pm at Hedges Hall, Point Lookout in Northport, Maine.
