Obituary of Maitland Alexander

Maitland Alexander III, 68 ISLESBORO - Maitland (Sandy) Alexander III passed away on February 5, 2018 at the Sussman House in Rockport, Maine. Sandy was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania on July 18, 1949 to Maitland Alexander Jr. and Ann Paul. He was the middle of five children who grew up spending summers on Islesboro Maine. After receiving his bachelor’s degree at the University of North Carolina, he moved to Bath, Maine where he married Charlotte Knowles Higgins in 1973 and had his two children. During his life he was a woodworker, pilot, registered nurse and boat captain before retiring and building his dream home on Islesboro, Maine. His talents were many: foreign languages, world traveler, gardening, beekeeping, cooking, sailing and boatbuilding. He would say his greatest accomplishment was swimming a 5K from Lincolnville Beach to Islesboro on August 19, 2017 in support of the LifeFlight Foundation. He is survived by his partner and companion Anne Bertulli, his daughter Sarah Alexander, his son Benjamin Alexander, daughter in-law Carly Cope, two grandchildren Laughlin Alexander and Maitland Alexander, and his siblings Louis Clark, Charles Alexander, Laine Alexander and Isabel Jackson as well as ten nieces and nephews. A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held at the Islesboro Community Center on February 24, 2018 at eleven o’clock AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sandy’s name may be made to the Sussman House in Rockport Maine or the LifeFlight Foundation of Maine.
