Obituary of Richard L. Small

Richard L. Small, 83, of Searsport, passed away October 31, 2017. Richard was born August 12, 1934 in Belfast to May (Lenfest) and Ephraim L. Small. He graduated from Crosby High School, class of 1954 and joined the Army soon after graduating. He served for 3 years before returning home, where he worked for The Belfast Moosehead Railroad,Truitt Brothers Shoe Factory, and lastly the Bucksport Paper Mill, where he worked for 33 years in the maintenance department before retiring. Richard loved hunting with his three sons and grandchildren, puzzles that challenged his mind, and working in his vegetable garden. He loved going to the county fairs in the summer with his wife; volunteered as a Little League coach while his children were young; and was an amazing "Papa" to four wonderful grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He enjoyed sharing all of his hunting memories as well as his stories of his years in the service and time at the paper mill. Richard loved family gatherings, holding lobster and clam feeds every summer as well as his time spent at Swan Lake at the family cottage where the days were spent boating and having great family fun. Richard was predeceased by his parents and brother, David Small. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 58 years, Phyllis (Barry) Small; his children: Kevin Small and wife Michelle of Belfast, Barry Small and wife Carol of Windsor, and Allan Small and wife Lesley of Verona Island; grandchildren: Miranda Small, Meagan Larrabee and husband Charlie, Mitchell and Christopher Small; great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Colton and Logan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 3, 2017 at 1pm at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast. A private interment will be held at Grove Cemetery.
