Obituary of Marie B Hall

Marie B. Coombs Hall, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones, on September 16th, 2017. She was born April 26th, 1928 to the late Bessie and Henry H. Coombs. Raised on Islesboro, a true island girl who loved her island and the beauty and serenity it provided. Marie is predeceased by her treasured siblings: Ruth, June, Lydia, Priscilla, Dorothy, Kathleen, Henry, Merrill, and Marjorie. Marie leaves behind her beloved daughters AnnMarie Mouw of Islesboro ME, Rachel Rolerson Smith and husband Kenneth of Islesboro, ME. Amazing grandmother to Amy Grindle McInnis of Topsfield Ma and husband, Steve. Travis Stearns and wife Margi of Belfast, and Ashley Rossiter of New Mexico. Marie also had two very special great-grandchildren Joshua McInnis and her namesake Marie McInnis of Topsfield, Ma. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and dear life long friend, Ruby “Mack” Rolerson Marie was devoted to her family above all else. She put everyone ahead of herself, always. Throughout her life, she could be found with her sisters the “Coombs girls.” Together they were as “thick as thieves,” headstrong, loving, funny and hardworking. Every Sunday afternoon after “dinner” (God forbid you call it lunch) they would meet at someone’s home or at the beach (depending on the weather and how everyone was doing that day). Often the kids, grandkids, great- grandkids, nieces, and nephews would join in the fun. They would serve Red Rose tea and cake or cookies. Marie would often make zucchini cake with ingredients from her garden. The family would gather around and reminisce about the “good ole days,” look at old pictures, play music, laugh, and possibly even tell a dirty joke or two. Throughout the years, Marie could be found working at the Owsley summer cottage cleaning, cracking jokes, playing pranks and caring for the family like it was her own. She loved holidays, especially Halloween. Marie, her sister Lydia, her daughters AnnMarie and Rachel, and dear friend Virginia could be found dressed up, trick or treating, attending Halloween bashes or even helping with the Preschool haunted house. They loved the costumes, laughter, and fun that came along with it. One Halloween she dressed up as her favorite animal, the cow, and managed to make sure that she could squirt people with milk. She loved to make people laugh. She was famous for her cinnamon rolls, custard pie, and zucchini relish. The beach was her favorite place to be. In the spring, summer, and fall when it was a warm enough day, “the girls” could be found exploring the island beaches. They discovered caves, fossils, beach glass, starfish, shells, driftwood, and any other beach treasure that appeared. There isn’t an island beach that the Coombs girls haven’t thoroughly combed. Marie loved her family, cardinals, roses, monarch butterflies, puzzles, word jumbles, the beach, gardening, Kit Kats, hot chocolate with whip cream and before the Boardman Cottage she enjoyed watching the sunset on her porch having a “highball” with family or friends. Marie will be remembered by all, for her incredible ability to find “luck” anywhere there was a clover patch. She would often be seen stooped over, bum in the air, looking for four-leaf- clovers. She found thousands in her lifetime and she always shared them with others. It was not uncommon for her to find a 4, 5, 6, 7 or even the occasional eight leaf clover. Marie is predeceased by her treasured siblings: Ruth, June, Lydia, Priscilla, Dorothy, Kathleen, Henry, Merrill, and Marjorie. She was an amazing grandmother to Amy Grindle McInnis of Topsfield Ma and husband, Steve, Travis Stearns and wife Margi of Belfast, and Ashley Rossiter of New Mexico. Marie also had two very special great-grandchildren Joshua McInnis and her namesake Marie McInnis of Topsfield, Ma.
