Obituary of Kearvelle Friedman

Kearvelle “Karie” Friedman (née Lazarus) died peacefully at her home in Montville, Maine on September 12, 2017. Karie was a poet and lover of languages. Fluent in French, she also studied Latin, Greek, Danish, Swedish, Chinese, and Portuguese. She received her B.A. in 1961 from Reed College, where she majored in French and English Literature and began writing poetry. In 1962, she married fellow Reed student, John B. Friedman. The Friedmans divorced in 1987. Karie worked for 20 years at the journal Reviews of Modern Physics. In 2008, after her retirement, she earned an MFA in creative writing from New England College in Henniker, NH. An active member of Maine’s poetry community, Karie published her work, gave readings around the state and enjoyed meeting with her writing group, The Poet’s Table. In addition to her literary interests, Karie loved family, friends and neighbors, classical guitar, jazz, world travel, cooking, and spending time in her gardens. She is survived by her two daughters, Jayne and Anna, two granddaughters, Karolina and Johanna, and three siblings, Jonathan, Dianne, and Peter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Food Bank, Planned Parenthood, or Amnesty International.
