Obituary of Darcy Blethen

APPLETON Darcy Laura Blethen, 33, exited this life in her home on Friday, December 9th, 2016. She leaves behind her greatest contribution to her and her family’s world, her precious daughter Sydney Wynn Blethen-Trull, and her cherished partner of 16 years, Nicholas Trull. Darcy lived with unparalleled authenticity and enjoyment of life’s adventures. She was a pillar in her small community and spent her life telling stories by the woodstove and chopping wood on her land in beloved Burkettville. Darcy relished in the beauty that nature offers, and soaked it up with the sun on the porch of her red camp on Swan Lake and on the shores of Bear Island’s beaches. Having taught her sisters to snowboard in childhood, her father in adulthood, and her daughter as soon as she could walk, sharing her passions with others was her greatest joy. Darcy continuously managed to create a professional life that revolved around her passions and skills, utilizing her infectious charm waitressing at Chez Michel, teaching snowboarding at the Snowbowl, exploring her creativity with J.K. White and collaborating on a construction company with her partner, Nicholas, a highlight of which includes building a favorite barn on Little Spruce Island in addition to projects across the MidCoast region. Darcy is predeceased by her paternal grandparents, David and Carolyn Blethen, and spent many years in weekly scrabble matches with her Gram Cal; her maternal grandparents, Almon Sidney Rivers and Charlotte Seavey Rivers, as well as a special Uncle, Frank Rivers; Sydney’s paternal grandparents, Alden Trull and Sylvia Barney, and Owen Smith, a dear friend of Darcy and like a brother to Nicholas. Darcy is lovingly survived by her parents, Aaron and Eva Rivers Blethen, her sister Whitney Blethen and partner, Daniel Laughlin, and her sister Ari Blethen. Darcy was fortunate to live her short life surrounded by a large and loving extended family. Her uniquely enchanting personality caused her to gather friends and neighbors who were more like family, including Sydney’s honorary grandparents the Smith’s, and the White’s, among many others. Darcy was surrounded by many friends of all ages, dating back to early childhood, encountered in recent years, and made through her struggle with breast cancer. The Blethen-Trull family wishes to extend deep gratitude to the incredible community that allowed Darcy to demonstrate her strength and tenacity while showing her how deeply she touched the lives of all who knew her. A service will be held to gather in celebration of Darcy’s life on Sunday, May 28th in an open house format beginning at 2:00 PM at Beaver Lodge on Alford Lake in Hope, Maine. Though her renditions will be difficult to recreate, Darcy’s family hopes to gather her loved ones’ favorite stories of and about her in advance and have volunteers share selections at 3:30 PM at her service.
