Dear David, Elizabeth was lovely. She was warm and gracious and very funny. We loved getting together with both you and Elizabeth usually around food or art, both favorite topics. We discussed the process of writing and making art many times and always learned new things from her. Elizabeth was very direct and honest which was refreshing and sometimes surprising but put her in the category of those you know who will tell you the truth. She was very modest about her talent and we feel privileged to have read some of her recent work which we enjoyed and thought was very good. We have always admired your connection with each other which was obviously loving and close. We will miss her very much.

Elizabeth and I worked together closely for the last 15 years. I will miss her tremendous intellect, her fierce wit, her dedication to whatever she took on, her deeply moral way of moving through the world. She understood so much about life and love and loss; when my son died six years ago, she offered me comfort and understanding that I'll never forget. There's a beautiful green glass on my desk, made by David and sent to me by Elizabeth for Christmas a few years back. I use it every day and will continue to do so. And now it will remind me how grateful I am to have spent years in her company. My heart to yours, David.

Dear David - I am so sorry and devastated for you and family members and friends. This is a terrible loss of a wonderful, warm, funny, generous, vibrant, and hugely talented person. I can't believe it. I am so very very sad, for you and yours, and for me as well, at the thought of never seeing her again. She was the bright star at the Bank Street Writers Lab, reading chapter after chapter from her wonderful book. I treasured her friendship. Elisabeth Jakab

David we are thinking of you and sending our love. We will come see you again soon. When you can remember to start creating again. Salvation. xo Valerie (and Jim) ****** I'll leave with this for now. ************It’s possible I am pushing through solid rock in flintlike layers, as the ore lies, alone; I am such a long way in I see no way through, and no space: everything is close to my face, and everything close to my face is stone. I don’t have much knowledge yet in grief so this massive darkness makes me small. You be the master: make yourself fierce, break in: then your great transforming will happen to me, and my great grief cry will happen to you. Rainer Maria Rilke (Translated by Robert Bly)

Elizabeth was my aunt, and I was named for her-- when I was small, we were known as "Big Betsy" and "Little Betsy". The idea that I will never see her again seems absurd. She inspired me to read, to write, and to dream. I will miss you so very much, Elizabeth.

I first met Elizabeth "Betsy" in junior high at the Surf Club where we swam on the swim team. We became close friends and that friendship lasted through the years. Though we only saw each other a few times over the years, we could always talk or message and pick up where we left off. We were a part of each other's youth - a special friendship and one I will always treasure. Marianne (Catt) Bilyew

I didn't really know Betsy that well, although we were both Class of 69. However, I had several horrible French classes with Molly who was sometimes my eye-contact anchor when I wanted to cry in class, so I want you to know that Molly and the family have my condolences and my prayers.

No one has ever been a more loyal friend or a bigger fan of those she loved! Her sometimes brutal honesty got my attention in a hurry and taught me important life lessons. Elizabeth was the sort of person that was up for anything. We all played softball and went bowling and ate Chinese food. She and David helped us put together my kids toys on many a Christmas Eve. Elizabeth tutored my son with his writing and they became buddies in their own right. She helped me take up old carpeting in our house until both our hands ached! My children and I will miss her. I will hold tight to the memory of her kindness, personal courage and her generous spirit. Love you, Elizabeth! Joanne
