Obituary of Grace Beman King
Grace Beman King of Brooks Maine was born in July, 1925 and passed away where she was residing at Harbor Hill on August 27, 2016 at 92 years of age. She was born and raised on a dairy and tobacco farm in Granby Connecticut with her parents Joseph Beman and Alida Griffin Beman. She lived at home with her brother Merrill until she went to nursing school in her twenties.
Grace married Delizon King in 1950 and raised a family in Westfield, Massachusetts. Delizon was a veteran and military hero of WWII, an American Legion commander and his occupation was as a house mover. Together for more than 18 years they shared many adventures. While married and raising a family, Grace worked as a Registered Nurse at Noble Hospital for over 30 years. She had many hobbies including master gardener, master knitter and seamstress as well as cross stitch artist. She also loved to read and soak up the sun.
She raised extensive flower gardens and created many beautiful gardens, generously knit sweaters and cross stitched works of art over the years; sharing her expertise at gardening and her other arts with her family during her lifetime. In her middle age years, Grace loved to take summer vacations with her best friend Mary Ackerman to the fishing village of Gloucester, Mass.
Grace leaves behind three sons and four beloved grandchildren in Brooks, Maine and Westfield, Massachusetts. She spent time with her sons families during different periods of her life, helping to raise and care for the grandchildren, spending summers and fall in Maine and winters and spring in Massachusetts. She loved to hike and go on picnic adventures with her Maine family well into her 70’s and spent much time in the outdoors soaking up the sun.
Grace will be sorely missed by her Maine family: son Donald, daughter in-law Deborah and her grandchildren, Jonathan, Abbey. Her Mass family still living includes: Robert and William King and their partners; and her grandchildren, Sarah and Gina King. She made many friends at Harbor Hill and was well cared for. She had a life well lived and loved. Grace’s ashes will be interred in her family’s gardens. Memorial services will be held privately. Donations in her name can be offered to Stanley Park, 400 Western Ave, Westfield, MA 01085 where she loved to spend time strolling in the gardens.
