Douglas Sherman Obituary
Douglas Lee Sherman, 69, passed away unexpectedly on May 18, 2026. Born on November 4, 1956, to Kenneth and Charlene (Davis) Sherman, Doug was raised in Liberty and graduated from Mount View High School in 1975. Liberty remained his home his entire life, living in the family home he loved dearly. Doug was proud of his small-town roots and carried throughout his life the values of hard work, kindness, and loyalty that Liberty instilled in him.
Doug was a quiet, hardworking, and generous man whose actions spoke far louder than words. He would do anything to help someone in need and never expected recognition in return. Those who knew him will remember his steady presence, kind heart, and unwavering loyalty to family and friends.
For 48 dedicated years, Doug worked at Mitchell's Sheet Metal, where he built not only a respected career but lifelong friendships. He often spoke fondly of his work and the people he worked alongside, taking great pride in the job he faithfully showed up for year after year.
Doug appreciated life's simple pleasures and routines. Most mornings began with a stop at Circle K for coffee and scratch tickets, where familiar faces and friendly conversations became part of his daily tradition. Friday and Saturday nights were often spent enjoying time at the casino, something he always looked forward to.
Doug loved being outdoors. Whether he was cutting wood, mowing the back field, or working in his garage, he was happiest keeping busy with his hands. Country music was always playing nearby from a radio that was never turned off, filling the garage and the yard with the songs he loved. He also enjoyed woodworking and creating handmade gifts for family and friends, each one thoughtfully crafted with care and love. During the winter months, Doug enjoyed plowing snow and never hesitated to offer rides to his grandchildren to help them get to work safely during Maine winters. He also loved driving down to the lake to check the ice and see if anyone was catching fish, finding happiness in the simple moments spent outdoors and around his community.
One of the places closest to Doug's heart was the field he loved mowing and caring for over the years. It was a place that brought him peace, and it was his wish to have his ashes spread there alongside Patricia, Billy Jo, and Uncle Raymond.
Doug was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia (Ouellette) Sherman; his son, Billie Jo Sherman; his parents, Charlene and Kenneth Sherman; his sister, Kathy (Sherman) Flanders; his brother-in-law, Basil Pearse Jr.; and a very special Uncle Raymond.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Kathryn (Timm) Sherman, whom he married on February 19, 2005; his son, Douglas Sherman II, and his partner, Sabrina Rashed; his stepdaughter, Jennifer Gunnels, and her partner, Ryan Saunders; his grandchildren, Nicholas Sherman and his partner, Rylee Cannon, Ashley (Sherman) and her husband, Adrian Phaenephom, Breanna Marr and her partner, Michael Cole, Jordan Sherman, Samantha Sherman, Gemma Sherman, Bailey Marr, Lily Marr, and Jacob Tucker; his great-grandson, Aiden Phaenephom; and Ashley's soon-to-be-born baby boy, whom Grampa Doug was so excited to meet, as well as a great-granddaughter, Elena Cole.
He is also survived by his sisters, Arlinda Pearse, Marcia Jewett, and Ruth Rhodes; his lifelong best friend, John Perkins; along with many extended family members, friends, coworkers, and loved ones who will deeply miss him.
Doug will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering work ethic, generous spirit, and the countless ways he showed love through simple acts of kindness. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the gifts he built by hand, and the many lives he touched simply by being himself.
A celebration of Doug's life will be held on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Liberty Community Hall in Liberty, Maine. Family and friends are invited to gather to share stories, memories, and celebrate the life of a man who meant so much to so many.
Memories and condolences can be shared to his tribute wall.
