David Lloyd Wentworth Obituary
David Lloyd Wentworth, affectionately known as “Grump,” passed away on May 17, 2026, at the home he built in 1988 in Searsport, Maine. His two daughters were by his side as he bravely faced the end of his life, and in the days leading up to his passing, he was surrounded by the love of his grandsons, mother, friends, and extended family.
David was born August 13th, 1950 to June Elaine (Nealley) and Lloyd Hervey Wentworth in Bangor, Maine. David grew up in Searsport, and with his outgoing personality and lifelong roots in the area, he became well known throughout the surrounding communities.
David was intrigued by the workings of the universe from a very young age, and this sense of wonder continued to evolve throughout his entire life. He was a lifelong student who especially loved exploring different religions, practicing transcendental meditation, writing and reflecting on philosophical ideas, and engaging in meaningful conversation with others who shared those curiosities.
In 1974, David met his lifetime companion, Priscilla (Batson) Wentworth. They were married on April 17, 1976, and shared a deeply loving and devoted partnership that remained one of the great prides of his life. They would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this past April.
After Priscilla passed away on March 29, 2021, David made it his mission to “live awhile for both of them.” Part of that pledge included traveling, and in 2022 he took a family trip to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park with both of his daughters and their families — an adventure that served as a special tribute to Priscilla.
In his final years, David also completed two cross-country road trips, spending several weeks visiting friends and family and enjoying extended time with his daughter and son-in-law at their home in California. He returned from his last adventure just two months before his passing, with his beloved 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon serving as both transportation and home along the way. He loved the simplicity and minimalism of van life, as well as the many conversations and connections sparked by the van everywhere he went.
In 2025, David also traveled to Faro, Portugal, where he attended a three-week silent retreat through the Tergar Meditation Community. His involvement in this community during the final years of his life supported David’s continued spiritual growth and exploration.
David had a strong work ethic and explored several career paths throughout his life, beginning with his father’s construction and hardware store businesses. He eventually started his own electrical contracting business, Tradesfolk, and earned his Master Electrician’s license, which he maintained for the rest of his life.
Later in life, David earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and pursued a career change going on to work at KidsPeace in Ellsworth for nearly two decades. In addition, he earned his real estate license and practiced at various points throughout his life.
David made a profound impact on many people throughout his career, as well as through his participation in Alcoholics Anonymous. This was very apparent during his final days by all who showed up for him and his family by sharing stories, memories, and expressions of love and support.
In 2011, when his first grandson arrived, David chose the name “Grump” in honor of his own paternal grandfather, who was known by the same nickname. He found great joy in being a grandfather and played an important and loving role in the upbringing of both of his grandsons who will miss him dearly.
David was predeceased by his wife, Priscilla; father, Lloyd Wentworth; father-in-law Donald Batson, mother-in-law, Mary Batson, and sister-in-law, Ruth Weston. He is survived by his mother, June Wentworth; daughter, Brooke Sisk and her husband, Randy Sisk; daughter, Libby Dimond and her sons, Mason and Nash Dimond. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Deborah and Blaine Horne; brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Candy Wentworth; sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Stephen Lyons; brother-in-law, Peter Weston; and dear friend Matthew Bixby, whom he thought of as a son, along with extended family and friends who meant a great deal to him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends of Sears Island, friendsofsearsisland.org. Sears Island was a special place for David & Priscilla and is where they can both be remembered. A celebration of life will take place in the summer of 2026.
Memories and condolences can be shared with the family on his tribute wall.
