Dr. John Geary Gregory, born on September 6, 1938, peacefully passed away on October 26, 2025, surrounded by his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, John’s life was a testament to hard work, faithfulness, and service. John is survived by his wife, Sandy, and his three children, John, Meredith, and Andrew. He is also survived by a beautiful legacy of grandchildren: Jack, Stella, Vivian, Willie, Bella, Delilah, Henry, and Kyle, along with his great-granddaughters Georgia and Genevieve. John was the beloved son of Harry Tudor Gregory and Dorothy Fulton Geary, both of whom preceded him in death.
John was born in Philadelphia, PA and attended St. Andrew’s School, class of 1956. He graduated from Princeton University in 1960 and went on to medical school at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, Class of 1965. He completed his residency in Urology at University of Pennsylvania in 1972 and moved with his family to St. Louis, MO where he served as Professor and Chair of Urology at St. Louis University, before moving into private practice. In 2000, John moved to Maine with his wife and two dogs (Sophie and Sam) and worked at Waldo County Hospital for another two decades before retiring at 81. John was a passionate woodworker who could often be found working on projects in his woodshop or out in the yard. He was also an avid reader and a life-long seeker of knowledge. John was a longtime faithful member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Ladue, MO and St. Margaret’s in Belfast, ME. Over the years he served in various roles at both congregations including reader, vestry member, and Sunday school teacher.
John was beloved by patients and colleagues alike and was especially passionate about mentoring and teaching young doctors. He loved what he did and continued working into his eighties.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of hard work, faithfulness, and service will continue to inspire us. A small funeral service was held for John’s immediate family on Monday, October 27th at St. Margaret’s in Belfast, ME, and a larger celebration of life will be held at a future date TBD to include John’s extended circle of family and friends.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on his tribute wall.
